The Panther Top lookout tower is the westernmost tower in North Carolina, located in the southwest corner of the state near Murphy and Hiwassee Lake. Although the mountain appears little more than a hill on a topographic map, the 30-foot tower affords spectacular 270° views of the region. A short, easy walk on gravel FR 85 takes you to the summit of Panther Top (2,293 feet) where you can see the Unicoi, Snowbird, Valley River, Tusquitee, and Georgia Blue Ridge Mountain ranges from the stairs. If you are in the region this easy and accessible hike is a perfect capstone after a day of adventure.

The hike up Panther Top Mountain is very easy, especially for kids! It’s only 1.5 miles round trip. It’s a 360 Mountain View from the top. You can actually see the cabin from the lookout!

(Local directions) FREE: Hike to the top of a mountain where a Lookout Tower is and take in the majesty of our mountains. 1 mile hike. Panther Top Lookout- To get to the Panther Top tower, turn right out of Tommy's Lane onto Spur 60N 3 miles. Turn left onto 64/74 W, drive west on US 64 1.8 miles and turn right 294 for 1 mile and turn right on Panther Top Road. Continue 2.8 mi. until the pavement ends and the road forks. Take the right fork. And go toward the Panther Top Shooting Range. When you get to the junction, there will be a sign indicating the shooting range to the left. Go right until you get to a gated road on your left. The junction can be missed easily if you are not watching for it. Park right there on the road. Walk through the gate and hike up the mountain. It’s about a 20 to 30 minute hike up. Bring hammocks and food. It’s amazing.

Close to the cabin, this old firetower is a relatively unknown gem that hikers like to visit. After a 10 minute drive, you will need to hike about 1.5 miles up the hill to reach the summit and tower. The hike is listed as easy (on a closed off, grassy road) but some causal hikers will find the incline a challenge. Once at the top, the views make the effort worth it! You can climb the steps, but the cab on top is locked except on rare occasions when the U. S. Forestry Service opens it to the public.
