Head to Stoke Newington Church Street, a 30min bus ride (No.476) from Bruce Grove station for a sweet village experience in London. Found within the beautiful residential area of Stoke Newington with indie shops, hip global eateries, chic cafes, and bars, Church Street is a great place to spot unique art and eat tasty food. It can be on the pricey side but there are some great spots, The Green Room and Acoustic Brasserie being two of my favourite spots. Be sure to pop into Abney Park Cemetery, one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ garden cemeteries of London, it is a woodland memorial park and Local Nature Reserve.

Lovely, buzzy neighbourhood with loads of great food and drink options. Here are some suggestions and recommendations covering this area and the surrounding areas. Parks and green spaces: Clissold park (opposite) is lovely and very popular, full of life throughout the year. There is a cafe in the middle in a nice house. There is a good childrens’ playground and hopefully a splash pad for when you arrive! Finsbury Park is about a 15 min walk - also nice and much bigger, with a cafe, open air gym, boats, playground… Abney Park Cemetery is in Stoke Newington and is more like a nice wood for walking where you can get away from the buzz of the local area! The Woodberry Down nature reserve is a favourite area of ours with a cafe in the centre. A 20 minute walk and there’s a nice circular walk around the reservoir (with ice cream). Coffee: Church Street in Stoke Newington is a short walk from the flat and has a wealth of coffee options. We particularly like the Spence Bakery for baked goodies and treats. The coffee shops in Clissold Park and on the Woodberry Down reservoir (called the Coal House) are also favourites. The coal house overlooks the nature reserve and has loads of outdoor seating, which is great in good weather. If you want something really close by you can visit the Hourglass Cafe which is just a few minutes stroll down Green Lanes. They sell tasty pastries and coffee beans and do brunch / lunch. Fink’s on Mountgrove Road is also a great place for coffee and baked goods - their bread and pastries are from the Dusty Knuckle bakery which is excellent. Down in Newington Green, there’s Jolene for fantastic (if a little expensive) baked goods. There are also plenty of coffee shops and brunch spots on Blackstock road, from North African cafes selling merguez and harira to European brunch spots (Beam/Blighty). Food: We really, really, love eating and there are so many fantastic food options in the neighbourhood, from fancy to fun, and everything in between. Booking ahead is pretty much essential for most places, especially for the weekend. Fancy Primeur, Petherton Road. This lovely, intimate restaurant is where we go to celebrate special occasions. It has a fantastic and seasonal menu with great wines. Quite pricey, but if you’re looking for something special, we can’t recommend it enough. Their sister restaurants are Jolene in Newington Green and Westerns Laundry (more seafood focussed) and are recommended. The Clarence Tavern, Church Street. This is another favourite for quality modern European pub food with a small pub garden. It’s on the more expensive end of the spectrum but the food is good. Trullo, Highbury and Islington. Famous Italian with delicious pasta! Prawn on the lawn, Islington. Super fresh seafood, buzzing atmosphere. Mid range Farang, Blackstock Road. Inventive Thai food that will set your mouth and soul on fire! The Lady Mildmay pub, Newington Green. We go here often for their excellent Sunday lunches and mid week suppers. High quality food/wine and good prices. FKA B.A.M. Islington. Fire inspired, modern Turkish influenced cuisine with a set menu for carnivores and vegetarians alike. Book ahead Flying Frenchman, Newington Green. Classic French fair for decent prices and a lovely atmosphere. Hala, Green Lanes. There are a plethora of Turkish/Kurdish restaurants delivering platefuls of fresh salads and charcoal cooked goodies. This is one of our favourites! Cheap and cheerful Ustun lamuchun, Green Lanes. Our absolute favourite Turkish pizza joint - does an excellent selection of pide (thicker, boat shaped pizzas), lentil soup with freshly baked bread and pickles, and both meat and veggie lamuchun (crispy pizza). Great prices too. Laza Eritrean/Ethiopian: The East African community is well represented in our local area - if you haven’t had Ethiopian/Eritrean food before, be prepared to leave absolutely stuffed full of deliciousness! Dusty Knuckle, Green Lanes / Stoke Newington High Street - lunches and brunches, and between Thurs-Sunday they do pizzas in the evenings. Great atmosphere and tasty food. Coal house, woodberry down reservoir. This daytime cafe does good sandwiches and toasties. Desserts! Antepliller, Green Lanes. Great Turkish sweets. Hard to resist! Romeo and giulietta, Albion Road: simply fabulous gelato. Further afield: Sambal shiok, Holloway Road. Delicious laksa (meat, fish and veggie) Xian impression: unique Sezchuanese cookery in a tiny family run joint - you can bring your own booze. The Eagle Pub, Farringdon Road. One of London’s earliest Gastro Pubs. Fantastic food, fair prices, always a real buzz in the evenings. You can’t book so turn up early for a table for more than 2, or be prepared to wait a bit over a drink. Brasserie Zedel (Picadilly) and Bellanger (Angel) are two grand brasseries with well priced meals and a fantastic atmosphere. Drinks: Clissold Park Tavern, huge outdoor space and popular for watching sport. Decent pizzas but very crowded on a sunny weekend. Brownswood Pub. Just a decent pub with cheap pub grub. The Londesbrough. Barbauld Road. Nice pub with a sweet garden, close to Clissold Park. Yield, N16, Newington Green. Nice cheese and wine on an outdoor terrace (or indoor). Stoke Newington with its bohemian charm is a more chilled and residential than the neighbouring Hackney, benefitting from two leafy parks, Clissold Park and Abney Park. Church Street is at the heart of the area, where you’ll find numerous independent shops and cafés to enjoy. You can buy your groceries at Stoke Newington farmers’ market, London’s only all-organic market.
