a beautiful path in the middle of the Balze of Valdarno (our little and unique Grand Canion). It starts in Castelfranco di Sopra, from Via Giovanni XXIII, 8, and takes 1 hour/ 1 hour and a half on foot.

Le Balze area has been declared a Protected Natural Area of Local Interest. Definitely one of the most beautiful and fascinating landscapes of Valdarno: that which is believed to be the backdrop to the famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. The Balze were formed, as has happened in Bryce Canyon in Utah, from sediment deposited by a lake in the Pliocene and Pleistocene, this lake was about 20 km long, occupying the current Valdarno. Over the millennia, when the lake has receded, its sediments have been subjected to a continuous action of erosion by the weather who have modeled them until assuming the fascinating shapes of now. There are two trekking routes available: Percorso delle Fossate 935 m Percorso Dell'acqua Zolfina 1 km

A few kilometers from Cavriglia, on the right side of the Arno river valley, the protected area of the Balze is a surprising, small Monument Valley. The best route to explore it is the CAI trail 51 “sentiero dell’acqua zolfina” (trail of the sulphurous water), so called because it partly runs along a sulphurous water source. This ring-trail starts in Castelfranco di Sopra, near the post office, and winds its way through a surreal landscape of natural spiers and cathedrals, surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. The route is 7 km long, including the detour to the charming village of Piantravigne.
