It's an alley between Harrison and Treat on 24th that has about 30 or 40 murals in it. First started in the 1970s by the Chicanos in the Mission. It began with the Chicano Civil Rights Movement as a way for people to reconnect with the muralist movement in Mexico and instill Mexican-American pride. It's just continued to expand over time, and now it's become a tourist destination in its own right. The entire project is a tribute to the Mexican muralist movement of Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and José Clemente Orozco.

Balmy Alley, located in the Mission District, is the best place to see the most concentrated collection of murals in San Francisco. The murals began in the mid-80's as an expression of artists' outrage over human rights and political abuses in Central America.
