This little diner is just down the road in Fairview and is connected to a gas station. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I recommend the huevos rancheros for breakfast and a burger or rueben with chips any other time. Also they just started serving homemade pickle chips! Enough said.

Sightseeing

You can get on the parkway from highway 74 just before you enter Asheville. The Blue Ridge Parkway (part of the U.S. National Park Service) runs north and south from Asheville with plenty of spots for roadside picnics, breathtaking vistas, and hiking. The 469-mile, non-stop recreational motor road follows the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, connecting Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks. With the use of the milepost system (the numbers increase as you drive south), you can easily find points of interest along the way. There is no admission fee and it's one of the most scenic routes in America. Going north, you will pass the Parkway Visitor Center (Milepost 384) and Folk Art Center (Milepost 382) on your way to hiking at Craggy Gardens (Milepost 367.6) and Mt. Mitchell (Milepost 355.4). Going south, check out hiking at Skinny Dip Falls (Milepost 417), Graveyard Fields (Milepost 418.8), and Black Balsam (Milepost 420.2). At Milepost 423.2, you can go south on Highway 215 also know as the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway to hike at Pink Beds and visit the Cradle of Forestry on the left. Go a little farther south to pass by waterfalls on the way to more hiking at Looking Glass Rock and John Rock off of Forest Service Road 475 on the right.

Just down highway 74 in Gerton, Bearwallow Mountain offers exceptional scenery in reward for a short hike! At 4,232 feet above sea level, with a grassy meadow at its summit, the mountain features a nearly 360° view that includes Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Pisgah. Its breathtaking vistas also includes a birds-eye view of Hickory Nut Gorge, downtown Hendersonville, and the high country of South Carolina. A historic fire lookout tower occupies the summit, as do grazing cattle who call the mountaintop home. The trail to the summit is approximately one mile each way. You can also follow a gravel road back to the parking area for a loop hike. Bearwallow is a great place to go for a short day hike or you can combine it with a hike on the Trombatore Trail, which starts at the same trailhead for a total seven mile hike. Also check out Florence Nature Preserve and Wildcat Rock trails at another trailhead in Gerton.

The 100-ft. tall Catawba Falls is located near Old Fort (26 miles east of Asheville, just three miles off I-40). In 2012, the U.S. Forest Service opened a parking lot and restrooms for the waterfall hiking trail in Pisgah National Forest. The 1.5-mile hike (3 miles round-trip) is a steady and slightly uphill walk but it is not difficult. It follows the Catawba River, with many smaller cascades along the way. It's a beautiful trail, with sounds of rushing water and short side trails to see it.

The Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary is a wonderful wildlife oasis in the very busy north Asheville area. It is a great spot for a evening walk or morning birding expedition. Walk a 3/8-mile boardwalk through a wetland area and by the lake, complete with sitting areas along the way to soak up the views and watch birds. Beaver Lake provides resting, feeding and nesting spots for resident and migratory birds. The Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society, a chapter of National Audubon, manages the 10-acre sanctuary. It was established in the mid-1980s, when Audubon successfully led an effort to prevent construction of a strip mall on the site. It's free to visit.

Take a self-guided walking tour of downtown on the Urban Trail. Stop in at the French Broad Chocolate Lounge or catch some live music at the Orange Peel. Do some shopping at the Mast General store or the Grove Arcade. Browse the books at Malaprops or Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne bar. Plenty of restaurants, cafes, and home to a string of breweries on the south slope. In the warmer months there is a huge drum circle that takes place every Friday night in Pritchard Park. There's also several events and festivals that take place throughout the year. We especially enjoy Downtown After 5 and LEAF Downtown AVL.

Haywood Road has been the main street of West Asheville for more than a century. Old buildings are now home to modern businesses, but the street still has a small hometown feel. As you walk down the street, you will see old buildings renovated for new businesses side-by-side with second- and third-generation shops. There are now many restaurants, breweries, pubs with frequent live music, bakeries, a variety of resale consignment shops, vintage clothing boutiques and even a half-dozen record shops lining the road that appeal to visitors interested in sampling the unique, bohemian flavor of Asheville.

One of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the country, Lake Lure is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Located about 27 miles from Asheville, Lake Lure sits in the Hickory Nut Gorge, surrounded by lush mountain tops and sheer granite cliffs. Look up to see the famous Chimney Rock. From the top of Chimney Rock, there are spectacular views of the lake and gorge. It has been a filming location for scenes from the movies Thunder Road, Dirty Dancing, A Breed Apart, The Last of the Mohicans and Firestarter. Take a relaxing walk on the boardwalk any time of the year (free) and cross the Flowering Bridge. Enjoy a picnic by the lake. They also have a huge swimming beach and water park open seasonally with admission. Nearby is shopping and restaurants in the village of Chimney Rock. More hiking in this area includes Rumbling bald (a favorite with rock climbers), Eagle Rock, and Buffalo Creek Park.

It's not a brewery but take it from someone who didn't like cider, this is the best cider I've ever had (not the overly sweet kind you find in stores). The place has a cozy, romantic vibe and makes really great small plates of food like marinated olives, fresh bread, sausages, and tortilla espanola.

Wicked Weed is probably one of the most visited breweries in Asheville and is situated on the edge of the south slope which is home to a string of breweries. You can do a self-guided brewery tour through the south slope and also check out the Funkatorium which specializes in their sour beers. I recommend also checking out Burial and Hi-Wire breweries while touring the south slope.

If you have kids, this park is a mile away. Just turn left on Old Fort Rd and it’s less than a mile up the road on the right. It has a playground surrounded by a paved loop for walking and riding bikes. There’s a creek to play in and a pretty nice view of the surrounding mountains.

Just down the road off of Highway 74, Shoji is the only Japanese-style bath house and spa on the east coast. Shoji Spa is nestled in the Pisgah National Forest and adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Soak in your own private outdoor salt hydrotherapy tub, add Shoji’s Signature tub side tea service and enjoy a variety of massage and spa services. Take an invigorating cold shower and unwind in the wet cedar sauna. It's an idyllic spot for getting away from it all with some well-deserved, therapeutic pampering.

A summer favorite around here is tubing. The Green River in Saluda and Deep Creek in Bryson City are our favorites but if you’re brave, the French Broad is also an option.
