Neighborhoods

Downtown Black Mountain, also known as "America's Prettiest Small Town," is beloved my locals and tourists alike. Just 20 minutes from Asheville, Black Mountain is close enough to explore Asheville in a day, but there are so many charming restaraunts, shops, museums, and outdoor activities there, you can easily have the perfect vacation here. As the "front porch of Western North Carolina," the over-sized rocking chairs in the middle of town square are a nod to this "little town that rocks" and a symbol of leisure and easy living.

Asheville has affectionately been called the "Paris of the South" and the "Land of Sky" because of the open sky against the brilliant backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This mountain paradise is a dream come true for the well-traveled foodie, art observer, adventurous beer fanatic, and die-hard outdoor enthusiast. Boasting a large stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway, more breweries per capita than any other U.S city, award-winning Restaurants, 30+ downtown art galleries (not to mention the 185 artist studios in the River Arts District), amazing festivals, and access to countless hiking trail systems, the Asheville and Black Mountain areas are the peak of vacation living.

To explore this unique building structure, you can take a self-guided tour or a schedule a guided tour. Designed by Rafael Guastavino in the early 1900s, this structure is unusual because it has no wooden or steel beams throughout as Guastavino constructed with tile or similar materials. The stain glass windows and a chance to stand under the largest free-standing elliptical dome in North America make this an interesting stop.

Hiking & Outdoor Recreation

Within the Town of Black Mountain you'll find another town all its own called Montreat. A popular hike among local college students, families, and out-of-towners, Lookout Mountain is a moderate to difficult hike that is a little over half a mile each way that is accessible from the top of Lookout Road. The peak of this hike offers incredible panoramic views of the mountains, and it's the perfect place to spot the Seven Sisters (a mountain range roughly three and a half miles long of seven neatly ascending “sisters” leading to their “father,” Graybeard Mountain).

Greybeard trail (conveniently located at the top of Greybeard Trail Road) heads to the top of Greybeard Realty and Greybeard Rentals' namesake, Greybeard Mountain, the tallest mountain in Montreat. The hike varies in difficulty but would be considered a moderate (but long) hike. As you can imagine, it takes some time to gain elevation to reach the top of a 5,408-foot summit. It would be good to allow half-a-day for this 6.5-mile round-trip hike. If you're headed to summit Greybeard, make sure to pull off at Walker's Knob Trail, a .16 trail that branches off of Greybeard Trail and leads to a hiking shelter and stunning views of the Montreat valley.

This 3-mile roundtrip hike is extremely steep, but it is totally worth it for the views of Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley. Big Piney's trailhead is located at the end of Suwannee Drive, off of Greybeard Trail road. The first half includes winding moderate switchbacks and then transitions to steep uphill and then back to moderate hiking as you near the ridgeline and make your way to the summit of Rattlesnake Rock.

From the makers of Asheville's "grown-up" grilled cheese sandwiches (Melt Your Heart food truck), Open Oven Bakery is an ideal spot to grab breakfast or brunch, or lunch. We are fans of their specialty breakfast sandwiches The Standard, and The Morning Melt, and rumor has it, the biscuits and gravy is some of the best in town. Open Oven also offers an assortment of omelettes, waffles for breakfast and some of their prized grilled cheeses, soups, and burgers for lunch.

This is just one of our all-time favorites. It's got a great name, is affordably priced, has delightfully unique taco mixtures with a good feel for Asheville! Try the Bangkok Shrimp or Jerk Chicken taco. If you're not feeling courageous, their Steak and Cheese tacos are equally as delicious. The original location is in the River Arts District on Roberts Street. The second location is on Biltmore Ave. in the heart of downtown Asheville.
