This is a local Hawaiian bar on the "Kingdom of Hawaii." They don't have everything in terms of an absolute full bar, but if you're just looking to have a casual drink, this place will do you right. It's great for people watching and is very laid back.

This is the best black sands beach on the island in our opinion, and it's only 20 minutes away. Parking is on the right, but you can also park on the street, either side. Bring shoes that will get you down a 1/4 mile hike to get to the secluded beach and be advised that it is clothing optional. Snorkeling is good here, but beware that the tides are strong. Bring a beach towel and hang out and soak in Hawaii at it's fullest.

Free, usually not too busy and plenty of parking. Public restrooms there as well, bring your camera and and aloha attitude and you will enjoy.

Cash or card is fine. Great to explore and breathtaking. You can do the whole adventure in about an hour, paved trail and not too strenuous but there are steps. There is also zip lining available at or near the park. The little village on the way is a fun little pit stop and has good brunch etc. at the cafes in town. Head over if you're in Hilo for the day or doing a tour on the top side of the island.

The newest black sands beach on the island. A bit rough, but still swimmable. A great place for surfing, if you are so inclined and able, barbecues / brunches, and just chliling. The drive to the area is really beautiful, as is the road towards pahoa, which was cut off by the lava flow in late 2018 but still partially drivable.
The most raw, and recent, hint of peles power. You can see the aftermath of the recent eruption here and really appreciate the scale and power of mother nature - as long as you are respectful to the nearby residents who have so recently lost so much.

Best place for reasonably priced groceries on the east side. Prices are half what you will find anywhere else, although you may have to buy in bulk. Cant live without!
