Parks & Nature

You might recognise this lake from the classic romantic weepie Brief Encounter (1945), where Alec (Trevor Howard) and Laura (Celia Johnson) enjoy an afternoon on a boating lake. Although the film is set in the Home Counties surrounding London, the famous boating scene was filmed in Regent’s Park. Alec falls into the water by the Long Bridge. Follow in Alec and Laura’s footsteps by taking a rowing boat out on the lake. There’s an early bird discount on boat hires if you go before noon and pedalos for those who don’t want to risk an in-the-water moment.

One of the last surviving country estates within London city limits, Osterley has shown up in a number of films, including The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Belle (2013). The portrait-filled Long Gallery was used for the touching scene in which Lord Mansfield begins to accept the young Belle, introducing her to an array of British ancestors. It’s easily accessible by tube.

The park is part of the Green Chain Walk, which links green spaces from the Thames to Crystal Palace Park. It’s a key location in director Michelangelo Antonioni’s classic 1966 swinging London film, Blow-Up. It’s the spot where the photographer, Thomas, thinks he’s witnessed a murder and where he later returns for the famous imaginary tennis scene. According to legend, during filming Antonioni insisted the scorched summer grass be painted green.

Perhaps one of the city’s most elegant council estates (and the heart of Shoreditch’s gentrification), the Boundary was built on the site of a demolished slum in the 1890s. The 2015 period drama Suffragette, about working class activists, re-creates the area as it would have been in the 1910s, with horses, carts, and washing lines strung across the streets. The estate’s restored Arnold Circus bandstand was identified by historian Peter Ackroyd as a place of tranquillity and silence within the teeming city.

Getting Around

Marylebone station is the setting for the frenetic opening sequence of the 1964 A Hard Day’s Night, in which the Beatles are chased by hordes of screaming fans. Sadly, the photo and phone booths where they hide are no more (the location of the latter is now occupied by Marks & Spencer), but you can still walk through the entrance where they arrive. If you’re a Beatles fan, make the five-minute walk from Marylebone to Baker Street, and take the 139 bus to Abbey Road (10-15 minutes) to join the tourists photographing themselves on the famous zebra crossing from the Abbey Road album cover.

Food Scene

Borough Market is where you might remember seeing Bridget’s bachelorette pad in the Bridget Jones movies. The entrance to her attic flat is next to the Globe Tavern on Bedale Street, and is the setting for some memorable scenes. The Greek restaurant where Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) have their unforgettable fight—now it’s a wine bar, Bedales—is just across the street. Channel Bridget there with a chilled glass (or five) of Chardonnay.

This traditional British restaurant was a favourite with Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. Later, director Alfred Hitchcock became a fan and used it in a sequence in his 1936 film Sabotage. The meal in the film happens in the upstairs ladies’ dining room, which was actually carefully re-created in the studio for the shoot. If you’re in the mood for splashing out, try one of Hitchcock’s favourite dishes, a roast saddle of lamb or a whole Dover sole. Pop upstairs to the Knight’s Bar for a cocktail. The walls are adorned with photographs of film stars and directors from the 1920s who used to frequent the bar and restaurant.

Sightseeing

Queen Victoria Street was a key location in the 1951 heist comedy The Lavender Hill Mob. Scenes from the film show just how severely bomb-damaged this area was. The change since the ’50s makes matching the film locations a little disorienting, but the robbery site between Lambeth Hill and Fish Street Hill and the steps of St Nicholas Cole Abbey is exactly as it was on film. St Nicholas Cole Abbey houses an excellent cafe, the Wren (named after architect Sir Christopher Wren), which serves artisan coffee and well-priced quiches, soups, and cakes.

The Southbank is a riverside cultural hub with theatre, cinema, and concert venues. Charles abandons his brother at the entrance to the British Film Institute indie cinema to run after Carrie in Four Weddings and a Funeral. Next to what’s now a skate park, Charles offers her the most convoluted declaration of love ever recorded on film. The BFI shows a wide range of classic and contemporary films. On Tuesdays a limited number of £6 tickets are available, and under-25s can get tickets for £3 up to 45 minutes before screenings every day.

Arts & Culture

The oldest surviving music hall in the world, Wilton’s was the venue for Dr Watson’s stag party in 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Transformed into a drink and gambling den, it was the scene of an impressive fight sequence between gypsy Sim and a Cossack assassin. The free-running stunts made spectacular use of the auditorium’s tiered balconies. An on-site permanent exhibition tells the story of this remarkable venue. Stop by to have a drink in the legendary Mahogany Bar. The art department for the Sherlock Holmes movie created this replica of the 1826 original and left it behind once filming was complete.
