The southern branch of the sacred Bodhi tree, where Lord Buddha achieved the eternal bliss of Nibbana 2600 years ago, was brought to Sri Lanka by Sanghamitta MahaTheree in 236 BC. King Devanampiyatissa planted this Bodhi tree in Maha Meghavana Udyanaya, under the guidance of Mihindu Maha Thero and since then, this highly sacred Bodhi has become one of the most respected icons of Buddhists from all over the world.
