Each site is convenated by QEII National Trust who describe Mahakirau "outstanding for it's ecology and wildlife value with brown kiwi, kaka, Hochsetetter's and Archey's frogs all present". It’s conveniently close to SH1 and SH2, but far enough to not hear any traffic.
