Brixton Village and Market Row are just around the corner from our apartment (a 1 minute walk) and you should definitely check it out! It's currently one of London's hottest foodie spots and has a unique charme that you won't forget very quickly. Pick a table in one of over 20 little restaurants serving a truly global cuisine, from Beijing street food (Mama Lan) over modern British (Cornercopia) to some of the best Thai food you will have ever eaten (KaoSarn). Prepare for queues between Thursday and Saturday in the evenings.

One of London's best restaurants full stop. The original brasserie from Manhattan with legend-status opened a London branch in Covent Garden a few years ago, and it's even better than it's NYC sister branch. Not exactly wallet-friendly, but you get an outstanding French meal for your money and possibly the best, albeit casual and friendly, service in town. It looks fancy, but no need to dress up or reserve a table, Balthazar will look after you no matter what.

Just a short walk from London Bridge tube station, Bermondsey street is a secret spot for foodies in town and unknown to most tourists. Just wander down the street and eat luunch or dinner in one of the many fantastic restaurants, from excellent Spanish tapas to rustic French cuisine. Most places offer a 3 course lunch menu for around 20 GBP - and what you get for your money will blow you away.

If you are in town over a Sunday, head to Old Street tube station and take a 3 minute walk to The Princess of Shoreditch, arguably east London's best gastro pub. Their Sunday Roast (a British institution one should experience at least once in life) is regularly voted No1 in town, and they offer a wide selection of ales, beers and an impressive wine list. Service is excellent. Walk through Shoreditch after and explore London's hipster Central.

Arguably Britain's best British restaurant. Has held its Michelin star for over 20 consecutive years. An absolute legendary place that most top chefs cite as their favourite restaurant. Expect chalk white walls, no music, no art on the walls and no fuss (the building is an old butchery), but impeccable service and some of the best food you have ever eaten. Wine menu almost exclusively French, prices are reasonable and you only pay for the quality of the ingredients, order dessert. Must-go for foodies.

Drinks & Nightlife

One of my favourite cocktail bars in London in the heart of Soho. In the basement of British star chef Mark Hix's restaurant. Sit at the beautiful zinc bar and ask the bartenders to make a drink up based on your favourite spirits and flavours. Order some bar snacks!

Take the tube to Piccadilly Circus and step straight into Hotel Cafe Royal. Ask for the 'Golden Room', which, as the name suggests, is gold-plated from floor to ceiling. Take a seat and enjoy live music cabaret on the weekends, often featuring lovely drag queens.

If you're central or don't want to venture out too far for a drink and some music, head to Black Dice, a seriously cool and relatively new bar tucked away in a small side street off Regent Street. Directly next to legendary restaurant MOMO, one of London's most romantic dinner spots.

Shopping

Once almost exclusively London's curry house mile, Brick Lane has been a great destination for vintage shopping for years. Not really a secret anymore, but the amount of good vintage clothing shops is so vast that you'll be sure to find something! Best spots: Absolute Vintage and Blitz. Sip a cocktail in one of the many little bars dotted along Brick Lane after or treat yourself to London's most famous Salt Beef Bagel.

An iconic tourist attraction for a reason. Portobello market is still an outstandingly beautiful spot in London. Head there early on Saturdays to grab some real bargains, from antiques and silver to funny bric a brac over vintage clothes and leather items to collectables and memorabilia, art and prints. Make sure you walk towards the very end, as the further down you get the cheaper things will be, and the better the offering. Grab lunch in one of the numerous pubs and restaurants around.

The Barbican is London's most cutting-edge cultural hub, it's huge and has an international reputation for selecting the most interesting artists, bands and films for the programme. The building itself is a London landmark, one of the most interesting examples of brutalist architecture London has to offer. Check events and concerts in advance.
