Sightseeing

This is on Jericho, 5 minutes walk away - Its a really beautiful church. Thomas Hardy's novel Jude the Obscure has a scene set in St Barnabas Church, and it is possible that the suburb named 'Beersheba' in the novel is based on Jericho. As an homage to Hardy, in 1996, one of Jericho's pubs was renamed Jude the Obscure.

OUR HISTORY When William the Conqueror invaded England and won the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Oxford Castle was marked by the Normans as the ideal place for a motte-and-bailey castle. Norman baron Robert O’Doyly took it upon himself to build this castle. Over time, our site transformed from a castle into a prison. Today, after one millennia, Oxford Castle & Prison is a visitor attraction with a story to tell. GUIDED TOURS OF OXFORD CASTLE Led by one of our costumed guides, the fascinating history of Oxford and its castle will be revealed as you… CLIMB the Saxon St George’s Tower, one of the oldest buildings in Oxford, and enjoy 360° panoramic views of the dreaming spires. DESCEND underground into the 900-year-old crypt, the only surviving remains of St. George’s Chapel. Where it is said, began the education for which Oxford is famed, and where Geoffrey of Monmouth penned the Legends of King Arthur. EXPLORE the austere confines of the 18th century Debtors’ Tower and Prison D-Wing. MARVEL the Mound of the 11th century motte-and-bailey castle. After your tour, you will be inducted into the castle’s prison and wider site where you will be able to explore at your own leisure. Admission to the castle is by guided tour only.

It is the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough and the only non-royal, country house in England to hold the title of palace. An Oxford institution as old as the university. The Perch is one of Oxford’s oldest pubs. We’re just a few minutes walk from the Isis (Oxford’s stretch of the Thames) and Port Meadow, a historic common stretching from Jericho to Wolvercote. In the summer, our garden is the envy of the whole city, and our 17th century plaster-rubble building with its traditional thatched roof will charm even the most seasoned pub-goers. There’s been a pub on our site for at least 800 years. In those 800 years, we’ve been a favourite of some of Britain’s best poets and authors, a frequent haunt of Inspector Morse, and even an influential venue on the British Jazz scene. In Spring 2015, we conducted a full scale renovation to bring a traditional pub into the modern world, and ensure we’ll be around for the next 800 years. We provide a refuge for everyone who loves great food and drink – whether they’re thirsty students, hungry walkers, exploring families, muddy dogs, adventurous visitors or

Located to the north of Oxford city centre between Park Town and Summertown is Aristotle Park Playground. This larger green space covers approximately 3.2 acres and contains a two large and well-equipped play areas, they are both tidy and well maintained, the first is aimed at younger children, it is fully fenced and has soft rubber flooring around the playground equipment which includes a three good climbing frames, swings, a roundabout and a rocker outside of the fence is a table tennis table and two large basketball nets. Further into the field are several large wooden and metal framed pieces of playground equipment which are aimed at older children such as monkey bars, individual swings and a nest swing. The large green space is perfect for running about, ball games, picnics, frisbee, kite flying etc. There is a small amount of informal parking along Aristotle Lane as this is a residential road consideration should be made to the local resident’s driveways etc.
