Hiking, Parks & Restaurants in Whittier

Nestled in the Whittier Hills, the hills form the backdrop for the idyllic scenes set throughout Whittier, The Whittier Hills form the backdrop for outdoor gazebo dining under the trees of the Greenleaf Promenade. The Whittier Hills offer hiking trails with beautiful views of Southern California from all sides. The numerous idyllic parks, the Greenway biking & pedestrian trail that spans the length of Whittier, and the very large Palm Park community pool all distinguish Whittier from other California cities.
Sycamore Canyon Trailhead goes through a section of the Whittier Hills called Sycamore Park. I love hiking through Sycamore Park. We often walk up to the water tower or beyond. I usually walk on Ridge Fire Road because it starts close to my house off of Grande Vista Drive, it's a beautiful residential walk before reaching the park entrance, and there is very little traffic walking up to the park entrance. If you go to the Sycamore Canyon Trailhead entrance off of Workman Mill Road, there is more traffic on your way there.

I've been hiking it most of my life and I love it. When you're at the top of the hills you can see the ocean or Los Angeles or Pasadena or Anaheim. To get to this trail, you can walk or drive to the end of Greenleaf Avenue. There's a small parking lot there with enough space for maybe 10 cars. If the lot is full, there's usually parking on a nearby street. The entrance has a nice, gentle incline into the park before the ascent begins. You'll love it.

This is a very popular trail but I've only been on it a few times because it is farther away from my house. To get there, take Beverly Boulevard until it becomes Turnbull Canyon Road and drive for a few minutes only. The trail entrance is on your left/north side. This is a popular area for mountain biking too. The views are also spectacular!

THIS IS A GREAT BIKING AND WALKING TRAIL! Several years ago, the city spent a good deal of money to convert the old Union Pacific Railroad tracks that went through Whittier into this biking and walking trail. They lined the sides of the trail with beautiful landscapes and landmarks. There are even stations for work outs at various places along the trail so aerobic and anaerobic work outs are free! We are so lucky to have this biking and walking trail. Thank you mayor Joe and the rest of the city council!

A very close walk from the Ericson House, this is a lovely park with a statue of Whittier's namesake, John Greenleaf Whittier. The park is surrounded by some of the oldest Whittier homes and churches, with a gazebo in the southeast corner. It has a playground and large lawn ideal for sitting and enjoying the music of summertime Monday Evening Concerts in the Park. Whittier is the best!

Quiet and picturesque. There is a bridge, a hiking trail along a little stream, pretty flowers, plants and many trees. Compared to Stanley Park in Vancouver, Penn Park is small but it's beautiful. There's plenty of room for reclining on the grass under the shade of trees or sitting on benches in the shade of the pergola. There are also jungle gyms, barbecue pits, and plenty of room for a birthday party on the picnic tables.

I grew up playing at Palm Park and enjoying birthday parties here. In addition to the tennis courts, they have a fun jungle gym for little kids, a very large lawn area open to the public for baseball and soccer games, and the beautiful Whittier trail passes through the park. On one side of the trail is a large, public swimming pool and tennis courts. On the other side is the park including picnic benches and barbecue grills. There's also a work out station on the side of the trail at Palm Park. For various sporting activities, Palm Park is the best park! It's off of El Rancho drive near Norwalk Boulevard. The swimming pool and tennis courts are off of Palm Avenue near Broadway.

This is the Palm Park public swimming pool. I also had lots of fun here at free swim as a child. The middle school across the street uses it for swim lessons during school days. However, when school is not in session, including summers, it is usually open for public swimming.

The Ericson House is within walking distance to this park, as well as to Penn Park. There's a great new jungle gym in this park, along with a small, outdoor amphitheater for kids, and a tennis court. Growing up I went to more than one Brownie or Girl Scout ceremony inside the little cabin in this park.

Do you have a dog? They will love this dog park! It is off the Whittier Greenway Trail at Philadelphia Street. There's a separate park for both big and small dogs and a place for the humans to sit!

The Greenleaf Promenade is outdoor gazebo dining on a tree-lined street against the backdrop of the Whittier Hills. The Greenleaf Promenade is a unique dining experience in all of Southern California. So far I have listed only 11 restaurants on the promenade and side streets, but there are several others that are crowded and lively and I want to try them. Please explore Whittier's restaurant row!

The Rusty Monk serves one of best desserts my husband and I have eaten. It's called the salted caramel pretzel. My husband ordered it so I had to taste it, and I couldn't stop eating his dessert! It is delicious! The Rusty Monk celebrates the monks who brew stellar Belgian beers across the seas, as well as local beers and hearty food. You will love their food and drink!

The 6740 was born in 1997 as a collaboration of three Whittier friends, Mike, Dave and Audi. On a wing and a prayer, they built a restaurant & bar that's been dubbed a neighborhood institution– a moniker they humbly accept with gratitude and love for the awesome community who sticks with them through thick and thin. When they lost Dave in 2015, they lost a part of their soul but know he lives in the heart of The 6740 forever. So drop by anytime for the burgers and the beer, the art, the music, the love. You'll find them tapping the finest craft beers, serving delicious homemade food, laughing and loving life.

JC's Kitchen is new to town and my neighbor highly recommends it for it's weekend breakfast entries. JC's is open W-F for lunch and dinner and weekends for breakfast and lunch from 10 to 3 p.m. I have not yet tried their food, but the omelet looks great and I look forward to eating there!

The Whittier Brewing Company is Whittier's first brewery serving fine beers and a variety of delicious foods. It's lots of fun with a great deal of open space both inside and out. There is a large private patio that can be entered only from within the brewery and a second patio accessible from Greenleaf Avenue. I love their chicken taco and their ambiance!
