18 Rue des ArchivesAn institution for observing the comings and goings of the Centre Pompidou across the piazza, Café Beaubourg is one of those places Parisians love to hate yet can't resist coming to. I feel somewhat the same. In my opinion, it's an essential rendezvous, with great people watching from the ranks of metal chairs on the terrace. With its raw concrete walls and mezzanine gallery, the interior, designed by Christian de Portzamparc, is the perfect, postmodern recreation of the classic Parisian café, and a place for hiding out over a coffee or glass of champagne. Staff vary from charming to aloof.

The food menu consists of French classics with Far Eastern additions (noisette of lamb sits next to tom yam chilli sea bass), but the great terrace views and extensive drinks offerings are enough to come here for beverages only. From the Pompidou you can walk towardthe Hotel de Ville and then across the river to the Notre Dame Cathedral, or if you are feeling sick of grand architecture and broad boulevards, walk back the the St. Eustache and cross Rue Montmartre until you find the Rue Montorgueil. This is a wonderful little street filled with shops, cafes and restaurants. I recommend it.

From the Pompidou you can walk towardthe Hotel de Ville and then across the river to the Notre Dame Cathedral, or if you are feeling sick of grand architecture and broad boulevards, walk back the the St. Eustache and cross Rue Montmartre until you find the Rue Montorgueil. This is a wonderful little street filled with shops, cafes and restaurants. I recommend it.
Tour Eiffel station
The Marais is also known for its numerous art galleries and design shops. A bit like Soho in Manhattan, the high end art tends to lean toward the more conceptual schools influenced by post-modernism and the success of Brit-Pop--- in some cases it is an enormous waste of beautiful space, in others, interesting work appears form time to time. For those with a greater interest in the early 20th century artists, the rue de Seine in St. Germain is a better spot to look. For those few who have come to Paris looking for beer visit La cave à bulles, at 45 rue Quincampoix with its huge selection of artisinal beers, many of which will be unknown to even the most knowledgeable beer aficionados

For those with a greater interest in the early 20th century artists, the rue de Seine in St. Germain is a better spot to look. For those few who have come to Paris looking for beer visit La cave à bulles, at 45 rue Quincampoix with its huge selection of artisinal beers, many of which will be unknown to even the most knowledgeable beer aficionados

There is of course the famous museum of modern art, the Centre Pompidou which looks like some kind of giant chain superstore from the future, and reminds me of the movie Brazil, and the bizarre and controversial fountains called Homage to Stravinsky designed by Jean Tingley (Kids always LOVE this fountain) Another much overlooked site which is invisible because it’s underground is Brancusi’s Studio. You can buy a ticket from the Pompido and visit the recreated workshop of the great sculptor. It’s worth it.

There are 32 bridges on the river in Paris, some of them more impressive than others. The Oldest bridge is the Pont Neuf which has been immortalized by artists and poets and even 20th century films.
