An institution for observing the comings and goings of the Centre Pompidou across the piazza, Café Beaubourg is one of those places Parisians love to hate yet can't resist coming to. I feel somewhat the same. In my opinion, it's an essential rendezvous, with great people watching from the ranks of metal chairs on the terrace. With its raw concrete walls and mezzanine gallery, the interior, designed by Christian de Portzamparc, is the perfect, postmodern recreation of the classic Parisian café, and a place for hiding out over a coffee or glass of champagne. Staff vary from charming to aloof.

Café Marly might be expensive, but the prices are worth paying at least once for the chance to sip a drink on a terrace in the Louvre courtyard, with views over the gallery's glass pyramids. Inside, the salons designed by Olivier Gagnère and Yves Taralon are a flamboyant mixture of Napoleon III, rococo gilt, and contemporary design. The food menu consists of French classics with Far Eastern additions (noisette of lamb sits next to tom yam chilli sea bass), but the great terrace views and extensive drinks offerings are enough to come here for beverages only. In the evening, models, designers and professionals come to taste the spirit and wine menus, including raspberry and pear eaux de vie...

Sightseeing

From the Pompidou you can walk towardthe Hotel de Ville and then across the river to the Notre Dame Cathedral, or if you are feeling sick of grand architecture and broad boulevards, walk back the the St. Eustache and cross Rue Montmartre until you find the Rue Montorgueil. This is a wonderful little street filled with shops, cafes and restaurants. I recommend it.

The Marais is also known for its numerous art galleries and design shops. A bit like Soho in Manhattan, the high end art tends to lean toward the more conceptual schools influenced by post-modernism and the success of Brit-Pop--- in some cases it is an enormous waste of beautiful space, in others, interesting work appears form time to time. For those with a greater interest in the early 20th century artists, the rue de Seine in St. Germain is a better spot to look. For those few who have come to Paris looking for beer visit La cave à bulles, at 45 rue Quincampoix with its huge selection of artisinal beers, many of which will be unknown to even the most knowledgeable beer aficionados

There is of course the famous museum of modern art, the Centre Pompidou which looks like some kind of giant chain superstore from the future, and reminds me of the movie Brazil, and the bizarre and controversial fountains called Homage to Stravinsky designed by Jean Tingley (Kids always LOVE this fountain) Another much overlooked site which is invisible because it’s underground is Brancusi’s Studio. You can buy a ticket from the Pompido and visit the recreated workshop of the great sculptor. It’s worth it. There are 32 bridges on the river in Paris, some of them more impressive than others. The Oldest bridge is the Pont Neuf which has been immortalized by artists and poets and even 20th century films. (see The Lovers of the Pont Neuf) There is a beautiful little island crossed by the bridge which the riverboat tours now use as a docking station. In the spring or summer it's a wonderful place to hang out on a bench under the willow trees, or sunbathe on the slanted stone embankments near the tended gardens in its center. To get there, simply make your way toward the equestrian statue of Henri V and find the steps leading down toward the docks. If you are the kind of person who likes watch boats

The Batobus is a boat service that runs up and down the Seine from May to the end of September, and it's a fun way to get around in Paris. You have the option to buy a 1-, 2- or 5-day pass, with the 5-day pass being by far the best deal. The circuit includes eight stops — Eiffel Tower – Port de la Bourdonnais St. Germain-des-Pres – Quai Malaquais Musée D'Orsay – Port de Solferino Notre Dame – Quai de Montebello Hotel de Ville – Quai de l'Hotel-de-Ville Jardin des Plantes – Pont d'Austerlitz Champs Elysées – Pont Alexandre III Louvre – between Pont Royal and Pont du Carrousel

Parks & Nature

Shady tree-lined paths flank the grand central alley, and ornamental ponds frame both ends. The much-sought-after chairs strewn around the ponds are a good spot from which to admire the landscaped surroundings and contemplate the superb statues executed by the likes of Coustou and Coysevox, many of them now replaced by copies, the originals transferred to the Louvre.

Shopping

The metro stop and shopping mall contain every modern shop imaginable, but there is a confusion to the layout, a million exits, masses of young hipsters and lots of policemen all crammed into an area that stimulates but tires--- it’s like an American mall on steroids, too much music blaring from too many shops, to many lights, too many colors, doors, escalators…

Synonymous with Parisian glamour, the Champs-Élysées cuts through one of the city’s most exclusive districts, studded with luxury hotels and top fashion boutiques. The avenue forms part of a grand, 9km-long axis that extends from the Louvre, at the heart of the city, to the Grande Arche de la Défense, in the west. Referred to as the Voie Triomphale, or Triumphal Way, it offers impressive vistas all along its length and incorporates some of the city’s most famous landmarks – not only the Champs-Élysées but also the Tuileries gardens, place de la Concorde, and the Arc de Triomphe.

Don't be deceived by the laid-back lounge atmosphere of the ground-floor bar, one of the busiest gay hang-outs in Le Marais. Upstairs, it is a pulsating den of DJs and electro dance music, themed parties, disco nights, Brazilian soirées, raunchy shower shows and all sorts.
