This is our favourite bar in the city! Make sure you take the elevator to the top to see the amazing city views. It is a vodka bar - make sure you get one of their amazing flavoured vodkas. It has a ground floor bar with tapas and a rooftop bar and restaurant.

On weeknights it's a suave low-key cocktail lounge. On weekends it heaves. Don’t let the modern furniture and feel mislead you, the cocktails at Black Pearl Bar are authentic and traditional. The juxtaposition between the drinks that are served in lavish vintage glassware, the 1970s and 80s pop-rock playlist, and the smooth, straightforward interior design is spectacularly pulled off. It’s a chaotic mess of ideas that can be accepted only in Fitzroy. Feel free to order off the menu. Or if you’d like to challenge your bartender with the most left-of-field drink that tickles your interest, you’re sure to be impressed.

Polly Bar is Fitzroy’s classic sombre cocktail and cigar lounge. Class is at the forefront of this cool Victorian-style bar, with its elegant deep-red interior, chandeliers, espresso Martinis and bartenders in crisp, dashing attire. You’ll feel like you’ve been taken back to the era of The Great Gatsby as you sip on one of the great, time-honored classic cocktails that are given only the greatest level of respect. Or perhaps try one of the original inventions by the team of exceptionally creative bartenders.

From classy to grungy, Bimbo Deluxe and its famous $4 pizzas and range of Australian beers is a great example of the 21st century bohemian lifestyle for which Fitzroy is famous. This hipster haven showcases Melbourne’s musical talent, with live DJs playing every night of the week. Among the rusted metal decor and miss-matching lanterns, you’ll almost feel overdressed in jeans and a t-shirt. But it’s not just about trends and fashion here. It’s about atmosphere, music and great, cheap drinks.

Mr Coles opened his first and second stores in Smith St in 1914 and 1919. The new Smith St store has opened less than one kilometre from where the first-ever Coles store opened over 100 years ago, with 83 new recruits as well as 17 team members who have transferred from other Coles stores in the area. Among the new employees are 11 indigenous team members who completed the first steps training course, which is a three-week pre-employment and mentoring course aimed at participants who have been out of the workforce for some time or not previously employed.

Joe Grbac creates magic, blending classical technique with local produce to create dishes that are seriously good value – $65 for three courses? We’ll take that any day of the week. The menu changes regularly, but could include dishes like roast chicken consommé with crispy breast. Head upstairs to Thomas Olive for pre-dinner cocktails.

From porchetta rolls to roasted beetroot salad, this huge café and provedore is a go-to for lunch. There’s usually a line for take-out, but there’s also an extensive cafe space, where the French rotisserie does its duty.

Smith Street is a favourite for lovers of Japanese food, and this izakaya is a crowd pleaser. Order loads of dishes to share: the excellent pork gyoza, tuna sashimi salad and double-cooked pork belly with yuzu sauce. If the restaurant’s full, head to cosy Peko Peko or rock ’n’ roll-vibed Teriyaki Anarchy Sake.

N’awlins comes to Fitzroy at this laidback diner, where the crispy baguettes are stuffed with cajun catfish, fried green tomatoes or deep-fried shrimp. For the days when you’re battling the night before, order the Dom – shredded braised beef served on fries with cajun gravy, mayo and pickles. Out the back, you’ll find Huey Long’s, a bar where you can get your sazerac on.

This pumping bar and eatery has heaps of personality and tonnes to enjoy from Daniel Wilson’s kitchen. Don’t leave without tucking into the jalapeno and cheddar croquettes (there’d be a riot if they were removed from the menu), and the Korean pork ribs with spicy slaw are always a favourite.

The sign says it all: ‘Ramen, bun & pie’. That’s what you get at this simple shopfront, with its long communal table and Stephen Baker mural. Start with a bun (brisket and kimchi gets the thumbs-up) before moving on to cosseting noodle soup served with pork belly, brisket, barbecue chicken or tofu. The pie changes daily, but cross your fingers for banana cream.

There’s something a little bit sexy about this room, with its exposed bricks, gleaming bar and low lighting. The premise is simple: choose your meatballs (pork, beef, chicken, fish or veg), add a sauce then something for them to sit on, including polenta or house-made pasta.

EASY TIGER! Cracking Thai dishes are the big attraction at this mod eatery. Start with some betel leaves topped with tea-smoked scallop and fresh coconut before moving on to sour orange fish curry and twice-cooked pork ribs with tomato and coconut relish. The wine list, mainly comprised of interesting aromatic styles from local vineyards, is worth a look, too.

HABITAT This beautiful space features greenery and moths (in the light-box art); duck out the back though, and you’ll find a sunny courtyard, one of Smith Street’s best-kept secrets. There are some excellent snacks to be had, from buffalo wings to gourmet toasties, but the real drawcard is the cocktail list. There are twists on classics – choc-mint julep, anyone? – and an interesting selection of old-fashioneds and martinis. Chin chin.

St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful, historic building, situated in the centre of the City of Melbourne, Australia. It is a place of worship and prayer. St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul's Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railwa
