Located along the city’s popular Gaya Street, Mad Ben (the MAD stands for Make-A-Difference) is a minimalist and modern café that offers cozy dining experience that is beckoning diners to stay a little longer. Mains are served with side salad and your choice of mashed potato or fries. If you are craving for a good juicy lamb shoulder, look no further. Served with the house mint sauce and gravy, the meat is marinated and cooked to perfection. Another signature dish is the tomato-based Pot Roast Beef – so tender, it falls off the bone! 11:00am to 11:00pm (Monday to Friday) 5:00pm to 12 midnight (Saturday and Sunday)

Lots of positive reviews for their savory tomato based soup. On some occasion, you can see tourist bus stopped at road side and let foreign tourist to experience this fish noodle too. The ingredients are fresh, plenty of choices to choose from. The price is slowly rising to the higher price range. but that’s pretty common in KK food scene past 2-3 years. Opening Hours Everyday: 7:00am – 3:00pm

Food to try Soft Shell Crab Rice Bowl Chiu’s Beef Rice Bowl – The base is hill brown rice (nasi bukit), topped with NZ Rib-eye steak grilled to medium-well, sunny side up egg and some pickled papaya for acidity and tuhau serunding for spice. Kuo Man restaurant has been serving home made noodles for a long long time. Their noodle has been featured on local food show, Axian @ Astro. I especially like their fish paste noodle and chicken noodle, some are big fans of their beef, whichever that is – they have already perfected the taste and no more complaints. They have been serving the same noodle for so many years after all. Opening Hours Everyday: 6:00am – 3:00pm

My personal favorite for Laksa! A hidden gem which is located in a busy commercial area. A bit out of the way if your intention is to spend time in downtown. Go there early for breakfast as laksa is usually sold out by 11am.

Drinks & Nightlife

A dining spot overlooking south china sea for tourist after nightfall. Good draught beers at Cock & Bull Bistro Kota Kinabalu’s one-stop dining and entertainment centre is found right here along the famous Waterfront. The Waterfront is a popular hangout for both locals and visitors alike. Plenty of food outlets to choose from, from Indian cuisine to fusion food. The Waterfront would come to life at night, a popular after-hours hangout and lots of great places to enjoy happy hours as you watch the sun set over the South China Sea.

Originally named Bond Street, Gaya Street located in the Kota Kinabalu Central Business District has been the centre of business for over a hundred years. The wooden shops with nipah roofs are long gone but here is where generations-old family businesses are still thriving passed down from father to son. Every Sunday morning, the length of Gaya Street is closed off to traffic to make way for the Fair. Shop for anything under shady trees and over-sized umbrellas, like batik sarongs, fruits and flowers, arts and craft, footwear, antiques and souvenirs, cakes, even pets and herbs!. The mosque sits on a 14.83-acre (6.00 ha) site at Pasir Road on the shores of Likas Bay, on the South China Sea. It is partially surrounded by a human-made lagoon;[1][3] this has given rise to the nickname “The Floating Mosque”.[5] It has a maximum capacity of 12,000 worshipers.[3] The mosque features an ATM, three madrasas, a palliative care clinic, and – in a joint project with Universiti Malaysia Sabah – a fish farm.[3][4] In 2008, the mosque introduced paddle boat rides, from which visitors could see the mosque from the water; a mosque committee member stated that this was to “mak[e] the mosque more relevant to the community’s life encompassing religion, economy and social aspects”.[5]

Jesselton Point is the city’s main ferry terminal, serving the popular tourist routes to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park by speedboat, and also trips to Labuan. Located north of KK east of the Waterfront, it lies within easy or moderate walking distance from most hotels and parts of town, including Gaya Street and base of Signal Hill. During the colonial era, it was a wharf that exchanged trade between Sabah (North Borneo) and the West. The old railway service from Beaufort transported their goods up to Jesselton (KK), where ready ships carted them for trade around Asia. Today, the ferry terminal area is also a popular nightlife spot and features a small shopping complex.
