Just get a peanut butter milkshake, you won't regret it! I don't even like peanut butter, and my heart goes potty-pat when I think about them. The burgers aren't half bad either, and you can sit inside and read about the oddly named places in the area, such as Loafer's Glory where this diner is located. I used to plan my patient home visits around having lunch at this little local joint. And it's right by the rafting place.

There are not enough words to describe the tastiness! The owner move here from NYC and brought her bakery with her, and we are grateful. When my daughter lived in Japan, I would take pictures of the huge selection of amazing baked goods to torture her and lure her back. It worked!

In one end of the old jean factory, the Ice Cream Deck sports the amazingly wonderlicious ice cream from The Hop (see my recommendation for them further down this list). Go there or be square.

Baked goods, right next to the OOAK Gallery. My son cannot resist their cinnamon rolls. Every time he buys one he calls me to let me know his joy, and he buys one for my mom on the regular!

These folks are really nice and will set you up with inner tubes so you can float down the river. Their pickup point is just down the road from the house at the swinging bridge!

Take highway 80 south to the Parkway and drive all the way to Asheville. It's a gorgeous drive with breathtaking views. Mt. Mitchell State Park, a place near and dear to my heart, is on the way, and has a restaurant with lovely views as well. Stop at Craggy Gardens for a quick hike and souvenirs, as well as facilities. The Folk Art Gallery is on the Parkway in Asheville, and if you go further you can hike up Mt. Pisgah and get some food at the Pisgah Inn.

One of a Kind Gallery has a lovely selection of arts and crafts from the area. Yancey County has the highest artisan population per capita in the country, and there are some excellent finds to be had!

Famous craft school that has been in the area a coon's age. People come for a week or two of classes and learn glass blowing, book-making, pottery, ironworking, you name it! In the early spring they hold an open house where you can go do small hands on projects with your family. Great fun!

Arts and crafters' collective in a beautiful setting at the foot of the Black Mountains. There are a lot of studios in the valley, and you can go visit most of them and see the artist at work. There is a playful quality to some of the work that you don't find anywhere else.

This is little museum above Main Street behind the Visitors Center. You can climb the steps or drive to the parking area behind the Toe River Craft Gallery. Find out about life in the area back in the day. It is fascinating, and was very different from life in other areas of the country.
