The Ethnographic Museum in Kraków was born of the passion and reverence for cultures. For peasant culture. For European cultures. For exotic cultures. Today, the Museum endeavours to be the place where the new description of the world – bygone and contemporary, far and near – is made. The world of custom that we ourselves find to be a mirror. In other words: the museum wants to be a centre of reflection and understanding oneself and others.

One of the most original streets of Kazimierz is one that bears the name of St. Lawrence (the patron of a church that used to stand there in the Middle Ages). Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the street saw an erection of some imposing constructions in the historicist style. First, a tramway depot was built in 1882, followed by its extension in 1913. In the years 1904-1905, the city power plant was raised on the neighbouring lot. Along with the city gas plant built in 1857 at 16 Gazowa Street near-by, the area constituted the most industrialised region of the city. This street used to be called Żydowska ("Jewish"). Its present name was given by the Austrians to honour their emperor, Joseph II, who used to live at its outlet in Wojewodziński Palace (20 Krakowska Street). Today, Józefa Street is famous for its artistic ambience. It features numerous galleries of modern and antique art as well as antique shops and stalls with souvenirs. Another notable element of the street is the High Synagogue, located at 38 Józefa Street. Built in the years 1556-1563, it owes its name to the prayer hall situated on the first floor. Here you’ll find the heart of Kraków’s artistic, bohemian character behind the wooden shutters of dozens of antique shops and art galleries. Peeling façades and obscure courtyards hide dozens of bars and cafes, many affecting an air of pre-war timelessness. Centred around the former Jewish square now known as Plac Nowy, Kazimierz has emerged as the city’s best destination for cafe culture and nightlife. Alternative, edgy and packed with oddities, Kazimierz is an essential point of interest to any visitor.

Most of the Jewish synagogues are huddled around Szeroka Street. Formerly, it constituted the main square of the Jewish town and the life of the district was concentrated around the Old Synagogue (24 Szeroka Street), the oldest preserved building of this type in Poland, which dates back to 1407. The Jewish Culture Festival in Kraków (Polish: Festiwal Kultury Żydowskiej w Krakowie, Yiddish: ייִדישער קולטור־פֿעסטיוואַל אין קראָקע‎) is an annual cultural event organized since 1988 in the once Jewish district of Kazimierz (part of Kraków) by the Jewish Culture Festival Society headed by Janusz Makuch, a self-described meshugeneh, fascinated with all things Jewish.[1] The main goal of the festiva
