We have a touch of Friends vibes in Deszka's lovely and cosy living room. Maybe it's the sofas or the warm atmosphere, but the new breakfast spot on Veres Pálné Street is a place for relaxation, youth, and joie de vivre. Not only is Mázli the dog in charge of the ambience, but also the utterly unique breakfast platters dreamed up by creative chef Árpád Borbély. No place offers an egg wrapped in panko or an Eggs Benedict based on a Hungarian cheese patty instead of a muffin. These price-defying solutions will also help you embrace the spot in no time.

An odd-on out among the trendy restaurants of Oktogon, Menza is a traditional take on Hungarian gastronomy. The design is retro, with striped tablecloths and flowery wallpapers. The menu combines tradition with modernity: here the old-fashioned Hungarian chicken soup and the artisan hamburgers get along. It’s definitely worth to drop by for a lunch menu, and on summer days, you can even take a seat outside on the terrace, with a refreshing cocktail in hand.

The Larus in Buda comprises a large terrace and vineyard with gorgeous views, as well as a spacious interior connected by sliding glass doors. The kitchen is headed by Vass Antal Zoltán and Déryné Lyáskó Zsuzsanna, who are one of the most significant figures in high-end gastronomy and contemporary culinary education in Hungary. His dishes represent a conscious and often academic pairing of flavours, with refined simplicity. The kitchen’s style is international, characterised by a variety of technologies, seasonal ingredients and exciting harmony of flavours, matched with fine wines.

Pörc & Prézli is an outstanding Hungarian restaurant close to the Basilica. It offers remarkable cuisine, while checkered tablecloths add to the ambience (but not in a tacky way). They showcase classics that will make a foreigner curious and a local enthusiastic. The perch fillet comes with remoulade sauce, the pork tenderloin with roasted potato dumplings and oyster mushroom, and the Somlói sponge cake cannot be complete without golden raisins. Above the music-themed Aria Hotel, the High Note Skybar is where savvy mixologist Marcell Sárközi and team scour the globe to come up with their seasonal creations, accompanied by jaw-dropping views at eye level with the clock atop St Stephen’s Basilica. You can even book at table on an elevated terrace so you’re almost touching distance from the equal highest building in downtown Budapest. The chalkboard drinks menu behind the counter almost the size of the bar itself, the Dzzs Bár is one of those classic, late-opening Budapest cubbyholes you always seem to stumble into at silly o’clock on some bar crawl and never be able to find again. As and when you do (it’s next door to the Massolit bookstore, if that helps), you might remember the bizarre art, the sassy staff and the thrown-together furniture. Actually, that could describe 20 other places within a ten-minute radius but here you’ll be sharing bar space with an installation artist or a struggling songwriter. Btw, it’s pronounced Zhezzz, the word ‘jazz’ in Hungarian as if spoken with a mouthful of bumble bees.

Prohibition-era mob leader Jack "Legs" Diamond was the first one to call attractive women hotsy-totsy, and even gave his nightclub the same name. Since then, many cocktail bars have picked up on it, including this one in Budapest. This underground bar and barbershop takes inspiration from the New York of the ‘20s with copper, velvet and mirror surfaces, brave cocktails and the unbelievable fantasy of their bartender.

This underground bar and barbershop takes inspiration from the New York of the ‘20s with copper, velvet and mirror surfaces, brave cocktails and the unbelievable fantasy of their bartender.

Located on one of the main streets of downtown Budapest’s party district, housed inside a decrepit apartment building from the late 19th century, Klauzál utca’s Füge Udvar has been a key player in the local ruin bar scene since its inception in 2012. Being the cheapest ruin pub of the city, with a smoking yard centered around the eponymous fig tree, a ping pong table, an extensive drink menu and lot of yummy burgers, it’s the site of an unforgettable Friday night.

UdvarROM is a no-frills ruin pub similar to Füge Udvar a few metres away on Klauzál utca, its name announced in red-and-green neon as you turn the corner from Wesselényi utca. Drinks prices are nice and low, regulars gathered in the covered and open-air areas of the complex. DJs spin at weekends, with a busier agenda taking shape as the party quarter emerges from the pandemic

A new trend in the every day life of Budapest is the mix of cultural services and gastronomy. At the beginning of Ráday utca, Púder bar-theatre puts this idea into practice, offering a good bar and an open cultural space: a place for music, fine arts, movement, studio theatre and literary events. World kitchen and authentic relish in the same time, in a peculiar, out-of-the-common interior, all this only 2 blocks away from the Hungarian National Museum at Calvin Square.

Lámpás situated under 15 Dob utca, can easily grow on you if you like zizagging cellars, bohemian vibes and good beer. Known for its surreal ambience, it would be an offence to categorize Lámpás simply as a pub. Near Müpa, Budapest Park is open from late spring until early autumn as an open-air concert venue and cultural space. Their motto since 2012 has been 'Leave reality behind', encouraging people to live it up and go wild to local and foreign musicians or at the afterparties. You can do all this over a huge expanse of 11,000 square metres, and if you get there a bit earlier, you can also check out the park’s cultural features, a temporary exhibition or a theatre show. Right by the stage is a great place to party, but if you’d prefer to have a more private experience, you can also book a terrace upstairs or an exclusive Sky Box for your group.

Akvárium Klub, the surrounding , and the adjacent Deák Square together constitute the largest and perhaps best-known meeting point of downtown Budapest. Thousands of youngsters gather here night after night to chill out in the park or on the steps of the club. Akvárium Klub is more than a simple bar: it is a culture center with a wide musical repertoire from mainstream to underground. There is always a good concert and a smashing exhibition, performance, or other event happening here, in a friendly scene, situated right in the city center. Furthermore, Volt-Lokál found inside brings the atmosphere of the best festivals to Budapest week by week.

The Opera House Hungarian State Opera – opened in 1884 – (Magyar Állami Operaház) is the masterpiece of Miklós Ybl, one of the greatest Hungarian architects of all time. The building is a splendid example of neo-Renaissance style, while its rich ornaments also show a few baroque elements. The auditorium can seat 1300 persons, and although the Hungarian State Opera is not the largest opera house, it has the 3rd best acoustics in Europe after the Scala in Milan and the Opera Garnier in Paris. Its best-known piece is The Nutcracker, which has enjoyed unfaltering popularity for years – despite being on show all December, it is almost impossible to get tickets for this Tchaikovsky ballet. There are two guided in the building every day, at 3pm and 4pm.

Both a museum and a memorial, the House of Terror (Terror Háza) stands at Andrássy út 60, the very building where victims of the fascist Arrow Cross then the Communist Secret Police (ÁVH) were taken during and after World War II. This gripping permanent exhibition commemorates those who were detained, interrogated, tortured or killed within these walls. The accent is on the early 1950s and the hideous brutality that followed the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. As always, the banality of evil strikes hardest – you might catch a video interview with one of the guards who describes ripping up last letters to loved ones desperately scribbled by detainees. Though echoing a dark period of Hungarian history, the museum does give first-time visitors a better understanding of the country’s complex political background.

What makes it special is that in addition to visual stimuli, your ears now play a major role, for which you will receive separate headphones.

The three major sections of the Budapest History Museum (Budapesti Történeti Múzeum) are found in different locations in the capital. The collections - Roman Antiquities, archaelogy (Aquincum Museum), Medieval (Castle Museum) and Modern Age, local history and fine art (Kiscelli Museum) were almost simultenaously created, but developed independent of each other. The centre of the Budapest History Museum is found in Building E of the Buda Castle, also known as the Castle Museum (Vármúzeum). If you wish to know more about the turbulent history of Budapest, visit the museum in Szent György tér, where you'll also find reconstructed parts of the Medieval royal palace and a few gothic sculptures.

The Kiscelli Museum satisfies the curiosity of visitors interested in the Modern Age history and fine art of Budapest. It is found in the building of a former baroque monastery and church in wooded park of Óbuda. Its permanent local history exhibitions showcase pieces of antique furniture, trade signs, blueprints, silverware, and contemporary photos, while the temporary exhibitions usually focus on the history of photography, fashion and sports. At the temporary exhibitions of the Municipal Gallery, the body responsible for managing the fine art collection of the museum, outstanding paintings, sculptures and installations by modern and contemporary Hungarian artists are on display, while their temporary exhibitions in the unique exhibition space of the ruin church focus on the artists of today. The museum and its surroundigs are ideal excursion spots. There is a hiking trail across the woods adjacent to the building, and you can also find the Kiscelli Calvary Stations, the Golgota Sculpture, and the Szent Vér Chapel here.

You can see walls covered with thick layers of mineral deposits that are unique in Europe: splendent, white crystals of gypsum, popcorn formations and calcite rafts. The comfortable and safe pavements and the modern electric lighting make the tour even more enjoyable. The main public park in town, Városliget (or City Park) was the central venue of the millennial celebrations of 1896. It may not be the largest park in Budapest (that title goes to Népliget), but it certainly is the most revered, family-, sport-, and pet-friendly. A massive redevelopment, the Liget project, has already seen the installation of a dog park, new sports courts and illuminated running track, with a House of Hungarian Music, the new Museum of Ethnography and the National Museum Research and Storage Centre to follow. These features will change the timeless character of this sprawling green zone, something that doesn’t sit well with all locals, and a protest camp has even been set up. Certain landmarks will remain in place, however, most notably the ornate Széchenyi Baths and, just over the road, the Budapest Zoo, incorporating features from the former Amusement Park that once stood alongside. Another major child-friendly attraction here is Budapest Circus, providing old-school entertainment. During the summer, you can row on the lake surrounding faux historic Vajdahunyad Castle, which houses the fusty Museum of Agriculture. Rowing, and skating, also take place on the larger watery expanse nearest Heroes’ Square – as the atmospheric City Park Ice Rink, it operates through the depths of winter, the busy Christmas period limited to season-ticket holders only. After skating, you can have a warming drink at the Városliget Café.

Part of the undulating Buda hills, Normafa is a popular hiking destination at all times of the year. There used to be an ancient beech tree on top of the incline, which – so legend has it – sprouted in the year of King Matthias’ birth in the 15th century. In 1850, a grandiose performance of Bellini’s opera Norma was held around the tree. From that time on, the area previously called Viharbükk (‘Storm Beech’) was renamed Normafa (‘Norma Tree’). Unfortunately the tree was struck by lightning and destroyed in 1927.

Pedestrianised Váci utca remains Budapest’s busiest shopping street, at least as far as the stretch between Vörösmarty tér and Ferenciek tere is concerned. Here, you’re deep in tourist central, hawkers attempting to attract passers-by to a restaurant table or to take a sightseeing bus. After Kossuth Lajos utca, a quieter section of Váci runs all the way to the Great Market Hall. The Danube is always close, easily reached by nipping down a number of side streets.

It is always welcome news when a new farmers’ market pops up in Budapest. In mid-March, friendly vendors from all over Hungary first set up their stalls in Czakó Kert – a laid-back hangout in Buda’s Tabán district – to proffer organic produce, quail eggs, mouthwatering meats, tasty cheeses, and countless other domestic specialties amid the rustic, rural, and friendly atmosphere of the garden of an old Hungarian peasant house.

Rudas Bath is probably the most popular medieval turkish bath in budapest. the bath has a special very late night opening hours every Friday and Saturday (the baths reopen from 10 pm to 4 am, both nights). Also, Rudas is the only thermal bath in Budapest, which has men only and women only days on weekdays, when aprons are worn by many guests instead of traditional swimwear.
