Coffee

De Mello Coffee has roots that wrap around the globe. Up until eight months ago, Korean-born brothers Felix and Won Cha had spent the majority of their lives living amidst the sandy beaches of Melbourne, Australia — a city well known as one of the world's coffee capitals. The brothers honed their roasting skills over the past eight years, working at some of the most successful cafes in the industry.

Reunion Island Coffee Bar proves Roncesvalles still hasn't reached its cafe saturation point yet, replacing Roncy's Bean with this first flagship shop of the 20-year-old Oakville-based coffee roaster , which went through a major rebranding last year. The cafe space now looks and feels very different from its predecessor, while also reflecting Reunion Island's rebrand; it's bright and minimalist, with cute - and highly Instagrammable - floor tiles that spell out "COFFEE" at the entrance.

Propeller Coffee offers a good reminder that one of the few bright sides to watching the urban industrial heritage of your city disappear is that whole new areas, once known only to truckers and empty when the sun went down, have been opened up to new uses, some of which don't involve condos. When Crema decided that its coffee roasting business needed to expand, it was to areas like this that co-owners Geoff Polci and Losel Tethong decided to look.

Hale Coffee is a roastery and coffee shop in the Junction Triangle neighbourhood, in the Clock Factory building that houses a mix of artists’ studios, businesses, fitness clubs, and more, and hosts other venerable Toronto coffee juggernaut Station Cold Brew. Hale deals with the hot side of things primarily when it comes to beverages, but they also have a bunch of tasty meals and snacks for you plus an industrial vibe to help you get away from it all.

Quantum Coffee opened inside the newly restored heritage building at 460 King Street West - you may remember the space as being home to Global Village Backpackers, or else as the Richardson House, the Hotel Falconer, the Spadina House or the Hotel Spadina before it. Clearly it has a storied past.

Le Gourmand is a bustling cafe near busy Queen and Spadina that's known for having some of the city's best cookies and other baked goods. They serve a loyal customer base of nearby condo residents and office workers, some of whom have been coming here for over a decade. They apparently get pretty miffed if an item gets removed from the menu.

Bobbette & Belle on Yonge is the brand-new uptown offshoot of a Leslieville patisserie equally beloved for their ornate wedding cakes as they are for their deliciously down-to-earth baked goods. After three years on Queen East, co-owners Allyson Bobbitt and Sarah Bell felt the time was right for expansion - and the former card and stationery shop, located a few blocks north of Lawrence, represented the perfect opportunity.

Cafe Patios

Boxcar Social, the latest coffee and wine bar in the Summerhill area of Yonge , owes part of its name to the train bridge and old station just steps away. The social part they cover themselves: effused through the warm, inviting two-storey house, felt in their serious attention to coffee, and created at night when they pull out the wine, craft beers, bourbon and scotch. The staff are enthusiastic, the conversation lively amongst patrons at the many spots to take a seat.

Cafe Pamenar has recently opened at the northern tip of Augusta Avenue, adding to the already congested coffee scene in Kensington market . But while the market sure has a range of cafes , something tells me this spot will do just fine thanks to its well thought out design, front and back patios (opening in the Spring) and commitment to high quality, artisanal coffee.

Happy Coffee and Wine offers libations of both the caffeinated and boozy variety with coffee by day and wine at night to go with a full lunch and dinner menu of shareable plates. The Parkdale space features minimalist decor and neutral colours, with the mix of dark and white walls usually splashed in sunshine from a large front window. The speckled stone countertop is lined by six old-school stools set across from a few tables on the opposite wall.

Full Stop has, potentially, one of the most fitting names of any new business in Toronto. The new spot in the Junction , just west of Keele and Dundas, is pretty huge as indie cafes in the city go, with seating for about 40 plus a giant patio. A huge yellow sign is posted on the wall, jovially hollering "sup" to visitors.
