City / Town / Villages

Heraklion is the largest city in Crete and the fifth largest city in Greece with a population of about 200.000. Heraklion houses the public services and the major scientific centers of Crete, being the commercial center of the island with the main port and airport. The ancient name Ηράκλειον was revived in the 19th century and comes from the nearby Roman port of Heracleum ("Hercules's city"), whose exact location is unknown. The city has a great history and, although its character has altered tremendously due to the catastrophic interventions of the past century, there are places that remind something of the beautiful Grand Castle of the Mediterranean. Even today the visitor can get a good taste of the glorious image of the past, while the locals can be surprised by the unknown corners of Heraklion and the story hidden behind them. Heraklion is close to the ruins of the palace of Knossos, also known as the Palace of Minos which in Minoan times was the largest center of population on Crete. Knossos had a port at the site of Heraklion from the beginning of Early Minoan period (3500 to 2100 BC). Between 1600 and 1525 BC, the port was destroyed by a volcanic tsunami from nearby Santorini, leveling the region and covering it with ash. It is located 5.5 km southeast of the city.

Fodele village is well worth seeing. Fodele is built in an area of orange groves and, according to historians, this was the site of the ancient town of Astali, which was the port of ancient Axos. Today, the people of Fodele may have overdone things with too many craft shops selling the same products, and many cheery tavernas

Beaches

The main beach of the settlement is a long and narrow beach with sand and greenish water. The Turks named this beach of Agia Pelagia as Tsanak Limani, because the round shape of it reminded them of a plate (tsanak = plate). Indeed, the water is almost always calm here and the bay forms a natural quiet harbor. The beach offers many options for watersports, diving, umbrellas, food and accommodation. The beach in some places is very narrow and the sunbeds have occupied almost the entire width of the beach, leaving little room to put someone's towel.

Paliokastro (or Paleokastro) is located 14km west of Heraklion, on the west shores of the Bay of Heraklion. It is a picturesque beach with pebbles, shaped in the exit of a green valley which is crossed by the torrents descending from the village Rogdia. Paliokastro cove is well protected on both sides by tall cliffs and faces east. East of the beach, there is a huge limestone rock, on the top of which once dominated Paliokastro Venetian fortress that protected the bay of Heraklion from enemy attacks. The castle, a part of which survives, is believed to be built on the acropolis of ancient town Kytaeon.

Psaromoura is located 22km northwest of Heraklion, just 500m north of Agia Pelagia. Like all beaches in the area, it faces to the east and is sheltered from the northwest winds usually blowing in the area. Right on the beach, there are no hotels or restaurants, but there many facilities within walking distance. The beach is pebbly and is very popular to locals, rather than tourists. On the north end there is a large rock with many foldings (the typical phyllitic stone of the wider area of Talea Range), which protects the beach from the waves.

Madé (or Madés) is a small coastal village located near Ligaria, 20km northwest of Heraklion and 4km east of Agia Pelagia beach. It is located near the northernmost edge of the Gulf of Heraklion, which called Cape Bourouni of Rogdia. To get this far from Heraklion, drive in the highway to Chania and take the exit to Ligaria / Mades. Just after 1.5km you will see a sign for Madé. In front of the village there is a very small bay with a pebbly beach, which is surrounded by several rocks and the small settlement Madé. It is well organised by the local hotel which provides umbrellas and sunbeds to its customers. Nearby there are a few rooms, a mini market , a beach bar and some taverns. The beach is quiet and mostly preferred by locals who have built their summer houses here. It is ideal for fishing and snorkeling, because the rocky seabed abounds in fish. The usual problem is that Madé beach has a northern orientation, which makes it vulnerable to winds.

The beach is very beautiful with coarse sand and turquoise calm water, while the small boats create magic scenery. The east part is less protected from the waves and gathers more dirt. Instead, if you go to the west, the water is usually cleaner and sea is flat. Smooth rocks are just near the shore, in the water, except from the west part of Ligaria, where there are some small parts with sand. It is very well organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, water sports, a diving school, beach bars, restaurants and rooms

Αξιοθέατα

Knossos was the most important city on Crete before the Roman Era and the center of the first brilliant European civilization, the Minoan. The palace of the city is the most visited archaeological site in Crete with more than 1.000.000 visitors per year. The palace is located just 5km south of Heraklion, atop hill Kefala next to the banks of Knosano Gorge. It can be accessed via Knossos Avenue, which connects Heraklion with Skalani village. Apart from the palace itself, the area is full with several more archaeological finds, which makes sense considering that Knossos was a town with more than 100,000 people. The palace was the seat of the legendary King Minos and has been associated with famous Greek myths, like that of Daedalus and Icarus, the Labyrinth and the Minotaur. Minos was not a person, but a series of kings with the same name (as we say Pharaoh in Egypt). He was deified and he was thought to be the son of Europa and Zeus, as described in the story of the Rape of Europe.
