Quake Lake Visitor center is a 40 minute drive from the cabin. Quake Lake is a lake, on the Madison river in Southwestern Montana. It was created after an earthquake struck on August 17, 1959 with 28 fatalities. Quake Lake is 6 miles long and 125 feet deep.

Mesa Falls is a 40 minute drive from the cabin. Upper Mesa Falls , a thunderous curtain of water-as tall as a 10-story building- pours over remnants of an ancient volcanic super-eruption. A mile south, Lower Mesa Falls repeats the performance, the river continually chiseling away at the solidified ash and lava. The beautiful Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are the last prominant waterfalls on the Snake River unaffected by manmade influences. a scenic walking path leads to excellent viewpoints .It is a spectacular waterfall and visitor center. Awesome to see.

Wade lake is easier accessible and gets more use. It's spring fed and stays partly ice free in the winter. It is home to prairie falcons, bald eagles and osprey. In 1929 Johnny Sack leased a small tract of land from the US Forest Service and began building his log cabin at Big Springs. Little did Johnny know when he first acquired the building site, his home would become a landmark one day discussed in the US Congress.
