An iconic institution that's been here forever and a day. I dare you to find a cheaper or more wholesome Japanese restaurant in Melbourne that's not a fast food outlet.

One of our favourites. This inside/outside riverside café offers stunning views of the Yarra River, great coffee and original menu items, as well as live music on Sundays. We love it because you can cycle there (borrow our bikes) along the bicycle/walking track in under 15 minutes, or walk there in 45 minutes--and tram home. Avoid peak times at weekends.

The start of the picturesque walking/cycling trail in the park at the rear of our place that takes you into the city if you turn left at the River Yarra, or up to Abbotsford and beyond if you turn right. Spectacular views of the city and life on the river (rowers, river boats, etc) if you turn left (25 minutes by bike to the city), or feel like you are in the middle of the country if you turn right.
