Totnes and Beyond

Within walking distance

The Totnes to Dartington cycle path is about a 30 minute walk or a ten minute cycle. The Dartington Estate is cross crossed with paths and the gardens and Hall are well worth a visit if you come to Totnes. From us walk down the High St to the Royal Seven Stars, cross across the roundabout to get to the old bridge. At the start of the old bridge you will see steps leading down on the left to a river path. This foot path runs alongside the river and emerges onto the Dartington Cycle Path. Continue on the path following the river until you get to the t junction with the tarmac Dartington Drive. Now you have choices - continue up the tarmac drive to Dartington Hall (gardens/cafe) or turn off to the left after the field to follow the cycle path to the Cider Press (shops /cafe) or turn right about 100m up the drive after the cycle path turn off to follow the river footpath all the way to bridge over the River Dart at Staverton. If you time it right you can get the steam train back to Totnes in the summer from Staverton Station on the other side of the bridge. Or you can continue to do a circular walk skirting around the edge of the estate ending up back at the cycle path to Totnes. The gardens at Dartington Hall are beautiful with sculptures by Henry Moore and Will Soukop (entry fee charged). Eat at the Green Table cafe (great veggie food) by the Hall. Dog walking - there are deer, sheep, cattle but no pigs. It does mean that your dog is best kept on the lead as there have been quite a few incidents recently and the estate have requested all dogs be kept on lead.

The tarmac Totnes to Sharpham/Ashprington cycle path is about a 15 minute walk from us. It’s probably a 40 minute walk from the start in Totnes to Ashprington (2.5 miles). The path is undulating to put it mildly but this does mean some stupendous vistas. For dog walkers beware there are sheep/cows/pigs in the fields. Ashprington has a pub, the Durant Arms. Or for the super hardy you can continue down the hill along the quiet Devon lane from Ashprington to Bow Bridge which is blessed with a ford and a pub, the Waterman's Arms - outdoor and indoor seating. To reach the start of the cycle path, walk down the High St and turn right along the Plains. Continue straight alongside the river until you get to the Steam Packet Inn. Turn right up the steep single track road and you will see the wooden gate leading to the path on your left. It is signposted and there is a map of the estate with points of interest. You will see from the estate map that you can do a circular route and come back on the lower path beside the river (muddy if wet).

A spot of history and stunning views. It’s just a short walk away - walk down the High St and take the left hand turn between the Totnes Brewing Company and White Stuff. The entrance to the castle is about 200 metres down the hill on your left. Check opening times.

Very pretty castle with a cafe. Great views and it's surrounded by woodland walks. It’s about a 15 minute drive or an hour’s walk through green lanes from Totnes. Walk down the High St to the Royal Seven Stars, cross the roundabout and head over the old bridge. At the t junction with Bridgetown Hill turn right and then cross the road and turn immediately left up Bourton Lane. This lane turns into the green lane leading to the castle. Take the first right off the green lane and then left once you hit the road. A short road walk down the hill and across a low bridge will take you to the public footpath heading off to the right on a quiet Devon lane to the castle. You will have the choice to turn right off this lane through the courtyard of a house and barns to a public footpath leading through fields and the forest to the castle. Or you can continue on the lane which also ends up at the castle. At the castle you will find loos and the Castle Cafe open in the winter at weekends and usually busy - so book for Sunday roast.

It’s a steep climb to Harberton along the lanes but the village pub does a great roast on a Sunday (you need to book). From us turn right up the bypass and then take the first right. This will lead you up the old road out of Totnes - it’s a steep climb with views out across the moors. At the top of the green lane it turns into a tarmac road which stops at a t junction. Turn left and then immediately right onto a narrow tarmac lane signposted Harberton/Tristford. Continue on this Devon lane until you reach a t junction - turn left and follow the road straight to the church. The pub is on your left.

Trip by car to Dartmoor

It is about a 45 minute walk though stunning woodland scenery to Sharrah Pool. In the winter months and during the week in the summer months you may well have the woods to yourself. Even in the summer months, the tourists remain around the car parks - walk your way out of the crowds ! The path does not stop at Sharrah Pool - you can continue on up the river and find your own swimming spot…. It is about a 30 minute drive from us to New Bridge which is between Ashburton and Two Bridges. Public loos in the car park just after New Bridge along with an ice cream van in the summer. The path starts on the left of the road through a wooden gate marked High Moors Way about 30 metres before New Bridge. Follow the path hugging the river past the waterfall and over the stile and you will find Sharrah Pool. In the summer months parking can be a nightmare so go early to get a spot. The car park is cash only and there is no phone signal here.

It is yet another beautiful woodland walk. It’s great for a rainy day as the woods provide some shelter. But it will be muddy ! Routes to the hill fort and river are signposted. It is a sheep free (usually) woodland walk with swimming spots. No loos or cafe. Free parking but it is popular in summer months. For food and loos consider visiting the monastery at Buckfastleigh which has both and is about five minutes by car from the woods just off the road back to Totnes. Hembury Wood is about a 20 minute drive from us near Buckfastleigh

A tarmac road leads up by the river to the reservoir. It’s about a 40 minute walk up and a great option if you like to avoid the mud. Follow the road straight up to get to the dam. The road is only used by reservoir staff. There are sheep but they tend to stay high on the hill. It’s a great walk for a muddy day or if you want a tarmac cycle path. Stunning views and as always the further away you get from the car park the fewer crowds even in the summer. There are loos in the car park and quite often a gastrobus. It is about a 30 minute drive from us. No phone signal. The car park is cash only unless you have a phone signal....

Plymbridge Woods are owned by the National Trust and stretch for miles. A cycle track runs through the Woods and up across the moors to Princetown. It crosses old railway viaducts and chugs through tunnels before arriving at Princetown. It is a fantastic cycle or walk. In the nesting season it has a vantage point on one of the viaducts where you can watch the peregrine falcons. Usually there is a gastrobus in the carpark. No loos. Trip by car to the beach

The tiny village of East Prawle is set on a hill above some of the best coastline in Devon. It has a great pub (the Pigs Nose) and cafe (Piglet Cafe). The village green provides parking and there is also a National Trust car park further down the hill (reduce your climb back up). There are public loos in the village. Not a lot of phone signal. Take the right hand road leading from the village green to the coast path. After around five minutes, turn to the right down a green lane marked public footpath at the first house on the right. Follow the lane to the t junction and take the left green lane. You will come out above the beach. Note the climb down is only for the agile with a head for heights. No life guards. Turn to the left from the beach and you continue round to the lighthouse on the fantastic coast path with ancient ruins and an old ship wreck. It’s Enid Blyton land… After the lighthouse there is a long pebble beach. Again very pretty and usually with lots of space even on the busiest day. If you continue walking you will get to Lannacombe Beach. It’s probably about a 40 minute walk along the coast path. Just before Lannacombe Beach you will walk round a rocky point. There is a house on the cliff and a tarmac private road leading back up the valley. Below the house is a small usually deserted pebble cove accessed by an overgrown path which turns right off the coast path before you go through the wooden gate. No food or loos or signal as it traditional ! But even in the most busy summer you are likely to find peace here.

Our main surf beach. It has loos, a car park, a Discovery surf school (lessons, board and wetsuit hire - book online) and a gastro bus in the summer. Dogs are banned on the main beach in the summer but are allowed on the dog beach next to the estuary. In the summer it is heaving. If you can't take crowds leave this for the winter months. Also in the summer months consider your arrival and departure times. A single track lane with passing places leads to the beach - if your arrival hits the around 4pm departure from the beach, it will take you hours to get down the lane. So it is a beach where it is worth considering your logistics before you go. And it goes without really needing to be said - if you don't like reversing or putting your car in the hedge (it's a hire car) this is totally not the beach for you. There is no other option - it is a very narrow lane. Despair not, the other side of the estuary is Bigbury beach which has a mostly two lane lane approach. Bigbury beach also has surf school, loos and a car park. But it also has Burgh Island (with the posh hotel), the sea tractor (to get to the island), a pub (on the island) and a Venus Cafe (good veggie food). So it is probably an extra few minutes away but also worth it. It is also heaving in the summer. Both beaches are lifeguarded in the summer and during the holidays. Both have rip currents (usually left hand of the beach at Bantham) and so it is wise to swim at lifeguarded times between the flags. Also at both beaches there are weaver fish in the hotter months - they live just under the sand and have a sharp sting. The lifeguards will produce buckets of hot water for you to bathe your foot if stung. I don’t know why but it eases the pain.

Mothecombe Beach is at the mouth of the River Erme. It has car parking, loos and a restaurant. From May to October dogs are banned from the beaches. As there is generally not a lot of surf (it is pretty sheltered), it is ideal for paddle boarding. It is best visited at low tide as the beach is minimal at high tide. At low tide you can paddle across the estuary. Not lifeguarded.

At Noss Mayo, park at the tidal carpark just below the Ship Inn. Food is served from 12 and dogs are welcome. It is busy so it is best to reserve a table inside or outside. The coastal path can be reached from the road behind the pub. The tarmac continues to just above Cellars Beach (pebble beach at low tide). The path is then cobbled or mud ! The path is an old carriageway - Revelstoke Drive. The views are stupendous across Plymouth Sound. It is probably the flattest section of coastal path . If you turn up to the left from the coastal path and head for the National Trust car park you can drop back down to Noss Mayo on a green lane (turn left out of the car park onto the tarmac lane and then first right down a green lane).

Thurlestone Village has a hotel (excellent food) a pub and two main beaches. Parking can be found in the field by the golf club. Loos also by the golf club. The two main beaches can be busy in the summer but if you walk on the coastal path towards Bantham, there are two non-lifeguarded smaller beaches best at low tide. The first beach has easy access the next one is more of a goat track.

Beautiful beach with national trust car parks. Public Loos. No dogs on the beach in the summer but you can walk the coastal path and hit the Beachhouse. Most excellent cafe with locally sourced fish. It has takeaway and allows dogs but you have to book if you want to eat inside
