Parks & Nature

Miles and miles of linear open space - canal sides, river side and, at Walthamstow Wetlands, lakeside. There are some amazing places to wander - lots of variety, and studded with cafes and water-related museums including Victorian steam powered fresh water (Ferry Road) and sewerage pumping stations (Markhouse Park). Lots of relic water filtering stations with big concrete basins and filtering equipment long since disused but fascinating to explore. The River Lea has long been used as a transport route and also a power source for many mills including Three Mills - now used for filming the BBC's Masterchef.

Good mini-supermarket for buying daily essentials. Further south, on Lower Clapton Road there is an organic shop and also Palm-2, a very popular independent mini-supermarket which also has freshly cooked meals to take away (sold by weight).

Entertainment & Activities

Hackney Picture House is a really great cinema with four screens and an 'attic' room for cosy watching. Afterwards there are plenty of local restaurants, bars and cafes - from Vietnamese to Turkish flavours.

A fantastic one-screen Art Deco cinema built sometime in the late 1920s or early '30s. It is run by the community and has short runs of mainstream and obscure films. Lots to do after the film: Stoke Newington and Dalston are full of shops, bars and restaurants and a thriving night life.
