BOROUGH MARKET is rich with history, but it remains as relevant now as it has ever been. As London’s oldest food market, it has been serving the people of Southwark for 1,000 years, and that extraordinary heritage is an important part of its appeal. But this is not a museum piece—it is a dynamic, ever-changing institution. First and foremost, though, it is a source of genuinely exceptional produce. I love Borough Market for the riot of colours, smells and sounds.

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and with it's lifting-road components has become an iconic symbol of London. Tower Bridge is sometimes confused with London Bridge, situated some 0.5 mi (0.80 km) upstream. This bridge is a 'must see' for every first-time visitor to London.

Several bridges named London Bridge have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark, in central London. The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1973, is a box girder bridge built from concrete and steel. It replaced a 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old stone-built medieval structure. This was preceded by a succession of timber bridges, the first of which was built by the Roman founders of London. London Bridge has been depicted in its several forms, in art, literature, and songs, including the nursery rhyme "London Bridge Is Falling Down".

Golden Hind was an English galleon best known for her privateering circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. She was originally known as Pelican, but was renamed by Drake mid-voyage in 1578, in honour of his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden 'hind' (a female red deer). Hatton was one of the principal sponsors of Drake's world voyage. One full-sized, still sailable reconstruction containing original pieces of the galleon exists in London, on the south bank of the Thames.

The Millennium Bridge, officially known as the London Millennium Footbridge, is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames linking Bankside with the City of London. It initially opened in June 2000. Londoners nicknamed the bridge the "Wobbly Bridge" after pedestrians experienced an alarming swaying motion. Modifications were made to successfully eliminate the motion in 2002. The southern end of the bridge is near the Globe Theatre, the Bankside Gallery, and Tate Modern, while the northern end of the bridge is next to the City of London School below St Paul's Cathedral.

This unique theatre is located in a former 1870s Menier Chocolate Company factory in Southwark Street, very close to Borough Market. The theatre stages plays and musicals (often previewing before transferring to the West End Theatres) live music and stand-up comedy. According to the Evening Standard, it is "one of the most dynamic fringe venues in London". This is a great night out for me.

Southwark Playhouse Theatre Company was founded in 1993 by Juliet Alderdice and Tom Wilson. They identified the need for a high quality accessible theatre which would provide opportunities for the best emerging companies and practitioners, and also act as a major resource for the local community. They leased a disused workshop in a then comparatively neglected part of Southwark and turned it into a flexible theatre space. I have had some thoroughly entertaining evenings here.
