Amazing local food with 1 plate feeding 2 adults! Food can take awhile to prepare so call ahead for take out (30 minutes plus wait typically). Outdoor dining is available. Consider taking to-go to Waimanalo Beach for a picnic.

Leonard’s Bakery is probably on everyone’s list when they visit Hawaii and you hear about these infamous malasadas that are piping hot and filled with different types of cream. If you don’t know what malasadas are, they’re basically fluffy, Portuguese-style donuts without a hole. They can be made with or without fillings that range from custard, haupia, chocolate, and more. My favorite variety to buy is the cinnamon sugar-coated malasadas with custard filling. They make them fresh to order so you get hot and fluffy donuts, sweet and spicy cinnamon, and a rich custard center–what’s not to love. Leonard’s Bakery also makes and sells other goodies that I loved, like the butter mochi–don’t skip out on this chewy and rich dessert when you order your malasadas. If you’re on your way to hike Koko Head Trail, there’s the Malasada Mobile parked at the Koko Marina Shopping Center nearby, and is the perfect after-hike treat. If you want to try other desserts and pastries, head to the brick-and-mortar store off of Kapahulu Avenue.

Small, Japanese counter-serve cafe featuring various bento boxes, plus grab-&-go bites like musubi. Some of my favorite flavors are teriyaki Spam; avocado, bacon, spam, and egg; and eel, egg, and Spam. There are multiple locations of Musubi Cafe Iyasume, so make sure to search which is the nearest to you. These are a great snack to buy for breakfast on the go or to save for later in the day too.

If you’re only going to one spot for traditional Hawaiian food, make it Helena’s. Locals have been lining up since the day Helena’s opened in 1946, though a James Beard America’s Classics award in 2000 has brought in even more diners. First-timers should order set menu D, which comes with kalua pig, lomi salmon, pipikaula (air-dried, juicy short ribs, quick-fried for crunch), and squid lū’au (a savory dish of squid and young taro leaves in coconut milk), along with poi or rice. Helena’s recently reopened for dine in, but also continues takeout service. [$$]

Popular roadside stand for fried & steamed platters of local shrimp & prawns, plus unique sauces. "This is not fast food." So if you're going to ask how long the wait is, don't. This is one hot spot for both locals and tourists. Be patient as it is run by a few people. If you're trying to call in and do a phone order, you may or may not get through depending if there is a line at the location. If there is no line, they're most likely able to answer your call. Cash only! Great for to-go and bringing to the beach, consider taking to Turtle Bay or nearby North Shore beaches to enjoy your meal.

Roomy, relaxed bistro offering all-day, homestyle American plates, plus a full bar & patio seating. Available downstairs on the lobby floor. There is a long wait line and they do not take reservations. I recommend arriving early about 10 minutes before opening in the morning if you wish to eat here for breakfast. The food is amazing. The home fries are nice and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The pancakes and eggs are nice and fluffy. They come in different flavors, but Cinnamon's is most known for their guava chiffon pancakes. The omelet is a filling portion size with the ingredients evenly distributed throughout, I definitely recommend trying that if anything.

A casual-chic eatery that serves breakfast and lunch daily. Named in honor of its owner Ethel Mathews, Sweet E’s Cafe is a family-run restaurant that reflects Ethel’s love of speaking to people through their stomachs. Since opening in October 2011, Sweet E’s has been recognized in many ways. It has won awards from Honolulu Magazine, Hale Aina awards, Honolulu Advertisers Ilima awards and Hawaii’s Best for “Best Breakfast”. Great views of Kailua side. This short, slightly strenuous at times (ropes for the tricky areas) sometimes narrow trail features 2 military bunkers & a panoramic view of Lanikai Beach. Highly recommended for an early morning sunrise view. Bring head lamps if you're going early or late. The hike can go on for about 3 hours but most people just go to the first two pillboxes which are about under an hour hike up. Parking is easiest at nearby beach.

A popular hike on Oahu and probably the most popular thing to do on Oahu aside from visit Waikiki Beach. It takes about 30-minutes to reach the top of the trail to find old war bunkers. From here, you will have amazing views over Waikiki and the ocean. The entire Diamond Head Crater hike is quite scenic but it isn’t until you reach the top that you have stunning views in all directions. This is truly one of the most epic viewpoints anywhere in the world and a must-do activity on Oahu. The entrance fee is just $5.

Koko Crater is where locals head when they’re in need of a really good workout, and it’s also a popular visitor attraction thanks to the stunning views from the top. In order to reach the summit, however, you’ll first need to conquer the 1,048 steps that run in a straight line up the mountain. The steps themselves are actually railroad ties left over from WWII, and while the first half of the steps are moderately steep, it’s the final push to the 1,100-foot summit that make your legs really start to burn. The reward for reaching the top, however, is unobstructed, 360-degree of the southeastern section of O‘ahu. Gaze down towards Hanauma Bay and the turquoise waters of the crater, and watch as waves break along Sandy Beach and form foamy ribbons of white. Neighboring Diamond Head looms in the west and is backed by Honolulu, and the island of Moloka‘i—and sometimes Lana‘i—float on the eastern horizon. To explore Koko Crater’s dry interior instead of hiking to the top, the Koko Crater Botanical Garden offers self-guided tours of the 60-acre basin and its colorful dryland landscape.

The small gift shop has a lot of cool snacks and gift ideas . If you get hungry there is a lot more then just the soft whip pineapple dole ice cream to eat. I would recommend on taking the short tour on the Pineapple Express train not only for the ride but also the cool facts and information that you learn on the way. But if the ride is not your thing taking a walk on the garden maze is a lot of fun.

Nuʻuanu Pali is a section of the windward cliff of the Koʻolau mountain located at the head of Nuʻuanu Valley on the island of Oʻahu. It has a panoramic view of the windward coast of Oʻahu. It is also well known for strong trade winds that blow through the pass (now bypassed by the Nuʻuanu Pali Tunnels), so be careful with those hats and loose clothing items! The Byodo-In Temple is a non-denominational Buddhist temple located on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi in Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. It was dedicated in August 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaiʻi. The temple is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple at Uji in Kyoto Prefecture of Japan. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a functioning Buddhist temple in the proper sense as it does not host a resident monastic community nor an active congregation. Inside the Byodo-In Temple is a 18 ft statue of the Lotus Buddha, a wooden image depicting Amitābha. It is covered in gold and lacquer. Outside is a three-ton, brass peace bell. Surrounding the temple are large koi ponds that cover a total of 2 acres. Around those ponds are lush Japanese gardens set against a backdrop of towering cliffs of the Koʻolau Range. The gardens are home to sparrows and peafowl. The temple covers 11,000 sq ft. The Byodo-In Temple is visited and used by thousands of worshipers from around the world. It welcomes people of all faiths to participate in its traditions. Apart from worship, the temple grounds are also used for weddings and office meetings.

Hanauma is a marine embayment formed within a tuff ring and located along the southeast coast of the Island of Oʻahu in the Hawaii Kai neighborhood of East Honolulu, in the Hawaiian Islands. Hanauma is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Island and has suffered somewhat from overtourism. At one time, this popular tourist destination accommodated over three million visitors per year. In 1956, dynamite was used to clear portions of the reef to make room for telephone cables linking Hawaii to the west coast of the US.

Rocky coastal area & tidal pools teeming with small fish for snorkeling, plus showers & restrooms. Bring your mask and boots(no need for fins). It is very shallow for some places, so I would say it is perfect for kids as well. But there are some sharp rocks, parking is limited, arrive early as possible, unless it is not crowded. Summer time is great for swimming and snorkeling. Wintertime surf is pretty rough. Often times the beach is roped off during the winter.

Located on the west side of Oahu in the city of Kapolei, the Ko Olina, comprised of 4 lagoons, has fabulous beaches for young children. Parents don’t need to worry about big waves, and the gentle waters are a great place for young snorkelers. 3 of the lagoons are mainly for the resorts nearby (Four Seasons, Aulani, and the Marriott), though you can easily walk on the footpath from lagoon to lagoon to visit each hotel and perhaps have lunch. Lagoon 4 (at the far end, after the resorts), is the largest lagoon and has the largest parking lot. It is also the best lagoon for snorkeling. If you see a turtle in the water, be respectful keep your distance (Hawaii’s green sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act and therefore it is illegal to touch, harass or harm a turtle. Here’s more on how we work to protect Hawaii’s turtle, and what you can do, too). Because of its location, the Ko Olina’s lagoons are home to some of the most stunning sunsets on Oahu. Locals come here with their young children since most beaches on the west side of the island tend to have large shore breaks and no public showers or bathrooms. Local Tip: We like to park at Lagoon 4, spend the afternoon at the beach (3:00 pm onwards), shower, watch the sunset and then walk over to the Marriott for dinner. The parking lot is small and tends to get full on the weekends by 9:00 am. Recommend arriving before 10 AM to secure a parking stall and shaded area. Ko Olina Beach Park does not allow for beach stand-up beach umbrellas or day tents.

Sandy Beach is a beach on the South Shore of Oʻahu in Hawaii. It is known for its excellent bodyboarding and bodysurfing opportunities due to shore break and consistent barrels. Consequently, more injuries occur per year at Sandy Beach than any other beach in Hawaii, earning it the infamous nickname, "break-neck" beach. The water is especially dangerous during high surf, when strong rip currents are present. The beach park is located between Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Park on the west and Makapuʻu Point on east along 8800 Kalanianaole Highway in Honolulu's southside neighborhood. In October 2014, Honolulu City Council member Stanley Chang proposed changing the name of Sandy Beach to "President Barack Obama Sandy Beach Park." The plans were dropped due to opposition from the public. Not recommended for young children or those who seek gentle waters. Do not swim if you're not a strong swimmer.
