7 min drive- Beer brewed on-site. Restaurant is casual with a good menu. This is a good Family place with in-door dining or outdoor in the warmer weather. There's usually entertainment on weekend night all-year round. "Located on the access road to the Sunday River Resort, the Sunday River Brewing Co offers a fun, casual atmosphere with an eclectic mix of locals, tourists and craft beer drinkers. Our menu offers a wide variety of sandwiches, salads & pasta favorites, all served in a family friendly atmosphere. Open 7 days a week at 6AM, specializing in mouth-watering burgers and artisan-fired pizza. http://sundayriverbrewingcompany.com

Stop in and you'll buy something here. Interesting selection of local Maine foods/drinks/beer/wine etc... Sandwiches are well done and they have cookies, whoopie pies, local candy and little bit of everything. Next door is 'Smokin Good Barbecue'. Their meat is very well done, smoked, and the sauce is a Carolina style with a vinegar base. Good place for lunch on a nice day at their picnic tables out front. Two Restaurants: Sud's Pub is Good. The more formal restaurant in the Inn I've not eaten here in some-time, but it's had a good reputation. From Website: "Executive Chef Peter Bodwell joined the staff of the Sudbury Inn in December 2000. Formerly the chef/owner of "Peter's Restaurant" at the Kedarburn Inn in Waterford, Maine and a Bethel native, Peter brings many years of fine dining kitchen experience to The Sudbury. MUST. TRY. MAPLE. COOKIES. If you want dessert it's right down the street! PM Bakery is near the end of the street. Go right on 26 and 200 yards down on the left. (yes, it's a 'pie-stand') The bakery is the Barn behind the stand and they put out great Pies, whoopee pies and an incredible 'Maple Cookie' that you have to try. Prices are from $1.50 to about $10 for a pie. Strawberry, Blueberry, Rhubarb pie etc... There's also Jams, Jellies and other home-made items too. Worth stopping in for sure. Bring cash and exact change as you actually pay on the honor-system. There's a steel canister to the right of the stand where you drop the money/cash. Be sure to take home a preserve and write in the Guest-book. (we only buy our desserts here, Seasonally in the warmer months) see Yelp!

http://www.localhubmaine.com This is a bit of a ride from our Lodge, so best to stop on the way in to Bethel. 'What there is to know about us is that we love food, community & the connection between the two. Food brings people together in so many ways from farming to cooking to eating. It not only makes us happy to be able to offer delicious food to our community and those passing through it, but also to make this food in a good atmosphere with locally farmed ingredients whenever possible. Not only do we offer delicious food to eat-in or take-home, we also have local coffee and espresso, local raw milk, yogurt, and cheese, local greens, fruit, garlic, and produce when available'

Parks & Nature

You're in the heart of outdoor, and hiking, country in Western ME. Too much to list all-in, so we've only put down some special favorites that are close, and worth working in to your stay. If you can run around all day and not get board, try to get most all of these in across a two-or-three day stay!!
6 min drive from Lodge: REAL EASY: Step Falls is a Must see any day, but best in the warmer weather. Series of natural waterfalls/slides cut into the mountain side. You don't have to be a hiker at all to do this 1/2 mile walk-in-the-woods to get the rush of the ME outdoors and an authentic back-woods feel. Good for all ages! https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/maine/placesweprotect/step-falls-preserve.xml

12 Min Drive from Lodge: MED: Table Rock at AT. Right at the AT guide board and across RT26 and take the right turn Orange blaze to the top if your an aggressive hiker. I'd recommend taking Orange only if your a good hiker and plan to use hand and feet. Do a loop by taking Orange up and Blue down. If you're looking for an easier hike take Blue up and down (much of Blue is the AT, but veer right off the AT about .6 miles up to get to Table Rock) https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/grafton-notch-state-park-baldpate-mountain-and-table-rock-loop

3 min drive from Lodge: HARD: So, you're staying on Puzzle Mountain at our Lodge and you can get to the top in a few hours by foot. (Views are impressive and amazing as you'll see the whole SR Valley Range and the valley floor. (best on a clear day) . Got right out of development and there's a gravel parking lot about .8 Miles down on the right. Park and head towards the mountain and use the guide board. Bring water and a small backpack if you have one. expect a 4-5 hour up/back. Careful on the downhills!

Follow these directions, not the mark on the map. EASY: Great Brook Trail (Walk from House) GREAT MORNING HIKE! Down Glades View 1/4 mile and head into the overgrown field on the left (at bend in road). Take trail on back left in the field. (It follows Great Brook 20 yards to the right). There's a swimming hole 120 yards up on the Right where the path widens and turns grassy. Follow the pine-grove path down to this small wading hole. Bring a suit in hot weather and cool-off in our natural swimming hole with a built in stone slide! (River Shoes recommended) Follow hike as far as you'd like; recommend a mile out/back. (This is the Snow Mobile trail that goes from VT to Canada!)

6-minute drive from Lodge. This is a couple hour hike and is good exercise. Views are OK, but not quite as appealing as Puzzle Mountain or either Eyebrow or Table Rock at the AT. There is a memorial (plane crash) toward the top of the hike. Difficulty: Moderate-strenuous. The loop trail on Mount Will is about 3 miles long and climbs to the top of the mountain, which rises about 1,700' above sea level. Though trail signs (added up) indicate the loop is 2.6 miles in total length, the town of Bethel has measured the loop to be 3.25 miles. Hiking this trail requires careful footing due to uneven ground, exposed tree roots, and steep slopes.

This is more of a short-walk than a hike. Good for a 15-20 min walk on graded paths out to 'Moose Cave'. Very good for kids, it's worth stopping for if your headed to the Screw Auger Falls or AT area.

This is part of the Appalachian Trail and is a serious hike. Be sure to be fully prepared for a full day of hiking. (6-8 hours based on conditioning and about 7 mile hike) Good hiking shoes, full Day back-pack with Lunch and plenty of fluids/water. Plan on 7-mile hike with most every terrain you can handle (short of 3 points of placement). Serious calorie burn and amazing views from the tower (if it's still open). Bring a good attitude, good company and engage the bearded through-hikers heading between Mt. Katahdin ME and Springer Mountain in GA. (Some cascading waterfalls within the first mile or so)

Popular Hiking destination and is on parts of the Applachian trail. The hike is listed as 2.6 miles, but seems longer. Plan for a longer hike. Dunn Falls is two falls with an apparent cumulative drop of 80'. More reading on this hike here, but be mindful that this hike is a further driving distance than similar duration hikes like Eyebrow and Table Rock; both with spectacular views. https://www.world-of-waterfalls.com/eastern-us-dunn-falls.html

Frenchman’s Swimming Hole Preamble: Frenchman’s is somewhat heralded as ‘the place’ to go and get a back-woods ME thrill at a Swimming Hole. It’s great, but it also can be busy, have a younger crowd and can get rowdy; if you’re looking for a more solitude experience, but just as much thrill, go to Deep Hole (above). Same thrill, closer, less crowded (if anyone is there) and more serene. If you only do one, we’d recommend Deep Hole. Directions: Head to Sunday River from our Lodge and drive up the Access Road toward the Sunday River Mountain. - Take the right at the fork towards Jordan’s bowl, set your Odometer here; you’re 5 miles away from Frenchman’s. - Take a right at the next fork, in 1.1. miles. You’ll pass the Covered Bridge on the left after about 4/10 of a mile (there’s swimming here as well) - Pass by ’Outward Bound’ on the right after a few-miles and keep going. The road transition to gravel road, keep going straight - Take the sharp left over the double bridges (guard rails on either side) and a take an immediate right at fork (after bridges) - Follow for .7 miles and you’ll see a clearing on the right with a picnic table. Just after this, park on the left in the gravel parking area (you’ll see a Dk Brown latrine by the parking lot) - Park here and walk back toward the picnic table; Frenchman’s is a short walk back down river.

12 min drive from Lodge: Main Street Down town Bethel is a good way to see the local stores, shopping and culture. There's DiCocoa's Cafe' as well as small, local retailers selling locally made wood products, jewelry, pottery, food et al.. We like Linda Clifford - Scottish & Irish Store. Recently moved in 2022 to the access road to the mountain it’s a great place to try some new beer styles!

5 min drive - The locals call this 'Deep Hole'. This is a naturally carved quarry-like basin in Bear River. Great place for adults and teenagers to relax on a hot day in the natural pool. Or, for the Type-T thrill-seekers, jump from some of the cliffs. (do not dive). Heights range from 7' to 22', or-so. Be sure to check the water level (it fluctuates) prior to jumping! (Grab a long stick, hop in and sink to the bottom while holding the stick in an outstretched arm to check the depth) 11' to 12' depth is required for upper heights. Try this on a hot-day early in your stay, as you'll want to go back!
