Point Pelee is one of our family favourites. This long peninsula stretches out into Lake Erie, ending in a sharp tip at the southernmost point in Canada. Point Pelee park is topped by marshland and low-lying forest that make it a haven for birds and butterflies during the migratory season. We love bathing ourselves in nature and exploring all the trails. Every time we go we see something different. It really has a special energy and we are so grateful to live so close to such an incredible spot.

With 5 kilometres of trails around this precious marshland habitat, Hillman Marsh is adjacent to Lake Erie and features walking trails, a nature centre, washrooms and viewing towers. A birding trail borders 87 acres of unique Shorebird Habitat where water levels are actively managed to create mudflats, providing outstanding viewing opportunities. These amenities are all accessed from the main entrance. Witnessing migration activity at the Shorebird Celebration in May is one of the highlights in the Place for LIfe. The diverse habitats of Hillman Marsh attract and support marsh, shore and field birds such as herons, egrets, terns, songbirds and ducks as well as a nesting pair of Bald Eagles. Over one hundred species of birds use Hillman as a migration stopover which draws sandpipers, ducks, warblers and frequently spotted annual rarities such as the Yellow-headed Blackbird, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Eurasian Wigeon, Glossy Ibis and Eastern Kingbird. The nature centre is open at limited times during the spring with excellent educational displays about flora and fauna typical to the area. This is one of the Conservation Areas used to educate students from across the region about conserving our environment through ERCA’s Outdoor Education Program. Entry fee to Hillman Marsh Conservation Area is $6 per car payable at the self-serve entry gate to help offset the costs of conservation.

Jack Miner became the founder of the Migratory Waterfowl Refuge System by establishing the Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary in 1904. It is located in Kingsville, Ontario, Canada. Five years later he pioneered the banding of migrating waterfowl; the recovery data was instrumental in the establishment of the Migratory Bird Treaty of 1916 between the United States of America and Canada as no government banding programs had been in existence at that time. The Jack Miner Migratory Bird Foundation was established in 1931 in the United States and in 1936 in Canada to continue the legacy of Jack Miner. The Foundation is a charitable organization that operates solely on grants and through the generosity of private and corporate Donors. The Board of Directors and staff are responsible for the ongoing operations of the Foundation.

Colasanti's Tropical Gardens has been a favourite of mine since I was small. It started out as a green house with a few ducks and swans to look at and has grown into a mini recreational center with a tropical plant nursery, petting zoo, children’s rides & indoor mini-golf. It is definitely one of my kids favourites. Plus they have an awesome restaurant with delicious broasted chicken and FRESH donuts! Delicious.

Two Creeks is a lovely place to enjoy some nature. It can be a bit confusing so follow the directions below. Two short walks. The first one to the 1897 railway bridge. Walk past the stage. Do not cross the Harvest Bridge. Follow the trail along the creek to the classic old bridge. Quite beautiful. Walk back. 10 minutes. Second short walk. Cross the Harvest Bridge. Turn left. Follow this trail through the evergreens to the Pearce Bridge. Cross it. Go up the gentle slope. Then turn left. Cross the red Hike Metal Bridge. You are back to the parking lot. 10 minutes. A gentle walk. The Wild Rose Trail. White arrows. Can be 20, 30 or 50 minutes long. It is shaped like the letter B but with three loops, with the straight back paralleling the road. One loop is 20 minutes, two is 30, all three is 50. Begin by crossing the red Hike Metal Bridge. Go straight ahead. You will see the sign and the arrow. When you get to the straight back of the B, you can turn right and cross the footbridge through the Weeping Willows and begin the second loop on your right or you can turn left and walk through the Memorial Groves and back to the start. The third loop begins at the next Weeping Willow crossing. Hardwoods. Pine woods. Grass lands. Wet lands. A more demanding walk. Many landscapes. Quite a bit of climbing. The Red Circle Trail. This trail hugs the creek and is shaped like a long loop. About 45 minutes. Begin by crossing the blue Harvest Bridge past the stage. Turn right and then left. Take the trail up to the pine grove and follow the red arrows. You will go through the grove and then descend to the creek. Keep to the right. Do not get sidetracked by cycling trails. Go past the Pearce Bridge. You will cross the Cockshut Bridge, the Hummingbird Crossing, and the Walnut Bridge. You will note the McIntosh Trail with yellow markers looping to the right off the Red Circle Trail. This is a 25 minute loop which passes through a Hickory and Oak Savannah. It rejoins the Red Circle farther on. You may wish to save it for another walk. Continue along the Red Circle Trail until you reach the North Bridge. Cross it. Turn left. You are now headed back. You will cross the Floodplains Bridge and the Marsh Bridge and finally the red Hike Metal Bridge. Voila. Your car.

A craftsman’s operation, Wolfhead Distillery incorporates the resources found in its own backyard in producing unique flavours that push the boundaries of standard Canadian Spirits. We love heading to this local restaurant. It's about a 10-15 min walk from the Bnb and has a wonderful patio. We prefer to leave the kids at home when visiting this lovely restaurant. It is a casual Finer Dining & Cocktail Bar with a beautiful view. Karen the owner is an absolute gem and she makes a mean cocktail. Often they have live music on the weekends.

In 2014, Jean-Claude (JC) and Justin set out to create the first wine bar in Essex County with a focus on elevating the wine experience in their home town. Cultivating relationships with their patrons is central to their vision. Their hard work and creativity resulted in a unique establishment where locals and out of town visitors can unwind with the best wine from all over the world, and tasty food, all served in an inviting atmosphere without pretense. Two years later, and by the end of 2016, Jean-Claude & Justin decided to start the expansion with adding a new location in the heart of Tecumseh town. Their dreams and goals kept growing with the unlimited help of the Wineology team. Late 2018, one more location in Kingsville was added to the list and led by Joe. The trio continued their hard work, long vision and expansion by opening one more location in Kitchener (January 2021). Stay tuned for more upcoming locations in Ontario and maybe in more provinces.

Delicious beer and a great atmosphere. The region in which Kingsville is located was the home of the Iroquois tribe. When French Canadian settlers known as Woodrunners came South exploring mainland Canada, they were met by the Native Iroquois. There was a peaceful understanding between the new settlers and the Iroquois sharing European farming techniques and knowledge of the local land. Our original beer, the Woodrunner Stout is named in their likeness. Our can pays homage to this peaceful relationship between the Woodrunners and Iroquois in many ways.

Experience

Greeted at the coffee house by our barista host, you’ll be offered a coffee drink of your choice; lattes, cappuccino, pour overs, americanos, cold brew and more. While enjoying your coffee; our Coffee Roaster will be in action, you’ll witness how we start from a green coffee bean, dropped into the roaster, and then spilled out hot.. our roasted bean cooling off in the agigtator; while emersed in the scent of freshly roasted coffee; you’ll learn the process of creating our different profiles, origins of specialty beans used, the different kinds of roasts and blends and how they come about. We will then tour the property, experiencing the smell the coffee roaster puts into the air; you’ll see a vintage 1950s truck, Airstream, refurbished old barn, farmhouse and walk through the gardens, greenhouse and take in the serenity of nature; you will be welcomed to another coffee drink (we recommend a cold brew on those sunny days!) A homestead garden meal will be provided and served within the property (meal location changes w/ season) You’ll finish off in coffee house where today’s roast can be sampled, & there will be a gift basket with all our blends and more for you take home! Other things to note Visitors of 14th Coffee Co often take pictures - so bringing a camera.. or your phone camera!
