A place of memory
Charles de Gaulle was born in Lille, 9 rue Princesse, in the house of his maternal grandparents, on November 22, 1890. The rue Princesse became for the future General de Gaulle the place of family vacations and games with his cousins.
Today classified as a historic monument and labeled Maison des Illustres, it has been the property of the Charles de Gaulle Foundation since 1991. The Charles-de-Gaulle birthplace has been managed and administered by the Department of the North since 2014. Accessible to the public since 1983, it sees its attendance increased each year, exceeding the symbolic bar of 20,000 visitors in 2019.
This house was the place of family reunion throughout his childhood and youth. It was in a family united around common values (patriotism, religious fervor, sense of commitment) and in a geopolitical context in full upheaval, that the character of the future President of the Fifth Republic was forged.

Have a walk in the park of Citadelle observing the impressive walls of this 17th century fortress built by the famous military architect Vauban.
If you travel with children, there is a zoo where you can find a white rhinoceros and an small attractions park. Don't forget to buy a French fries cone in the "baraque a frites".
If you like water activities you can take boats to discover La Deule (the canal).
There is also a nice boat restaurant L'Archimède just bearby where you can drink a cold beer on the terrace.

Braderie de Lille
Each first weekend of September Lille becomes a huge flea market. Braderie is the key event and attracts millions of tourists every year. You can buy anything you like here and of course, you can enjoy the local food and beer as well as the joyful atmosphere. The shops usually sell the thing with big discounts during this weekend as well.
At the heart of the city is the Grand'Place, also called Place du Général de Gaulle (Charles de Gaulle was born in Lille in 1890).
A meeting place for all Lille residents, it is dominated by four women: the Goddess in its center who commemorates the siege of Lille by the Austrians in 1792 and the three women who crown the building of the Voix du Nord. These three graces represent the three provinces of the region: Artois, Flanders and Hainaut.
The Grand'Place, born in the Middle Ages, at the crossroads of the great fairs between the North and the South, is dedicated to commerce, of which the Vieille Bourse remains the sumptuous symbol.
Opposite the Old Stock Exchange, the Grand Garde, built in 1717, is the perfect example of classical architecture. We recognize in the triangular pediment the sun of Louis XIV and, on both sides, the coats of arms of France and Lille.

The old stock exchange, built from 1652 to 1653 by Julien Destrée, is undoubtedly the most beautiful monument in the city. This is a flea market for books. You can find all kind of books here, historical as well as comics at a reasonable price.
