Sightseeing

Named the ‘Cape of Storms’ by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488; the ‘Point’ was treated with respect by sailors for centuries. By day, it was a navigational landmark and by night, and in fog, it was a menace beset by violent storms and dangerous rocks that over the centuries littered shipwrecks around the coastline. In 1859 the first lighthouse was completed; it still stands at 238 metres above sea-level on the highest section of the peak and is now used as the centralised monitoring point for all the lighthouses on the coast of South Africa. +27 21 7809010 info@capepoint.co.za

Parks & Nature

Chapman’s Peak is named after John Chapman, the Captain’s mate of an English ship, the Consent. The peak which looms overhead was not named after a governor or brave mountaineer, but a lowly ship's pilot. In 1607 the skipper of the British ship Contest found his vessel becalmed in what is now Hout Bay and sent his pilot, John Chapman, to row ashore in the hope of finding provisions. The pilot later recorded the bay as Chapman's Chaunce (chance) and the name stuck, becoming official on all East India charts.

Entertainment & Activities

Fish Hoek beach is one of the most beautiful in the world with a gentle curving reach from Clovelly Station to the north past the mouth of the Silvermine River (and adjacent wetlands) to the little lighthouse mid-way which represents the start of the developed shoreline. The walkway stretches all the way to Sunny Cove Station at the southern edge. Dog walking is allowed from Clovelly to the start of the walkway/beach wall but prohibited from here to Sunny Cove. "The beach is about 1.5 km long and quite flat, and the bay is protected from the currents and stronger surf in the rest of False Bay. Swimming is allowed along the entire beach with lifesavers on duty during the summer peak season.
