The northwest corner of Oakland County is rural horse country, an area of rolling pastures, whitewashed fences, faded red barns and mares and foals trotting through open meadows. In the middle of it is Rose Oaks County Park, the reason its trail system is open to horseback riding and probably used more by equestrians than hikers.
The 637-acre park was purchased by the county 1995 to become its 11th park. Its terrain includes wooded uplands and gently rolling open meadows. But it’s dominated by wetlands and a series of small glacially-created lakes. Almost a third of Rose Oaks, some 200 acres, is marshes and vast cattail swamps that surround two creeks and almost a dozen ponds and lakes. Needless to say, insects can be ferocious here, particularly deer flies in July. Wildlife includes whitetail deer, waterfowl, a variety of woodland birds and beavers who have set up lodges on the lakes.
The park’s trail system totals 4 miles and is a pair loops with the 1.67-mile Richardson Loop skirting its namesake lake to the north and the 1.69-mile Esler Loop in the southern half of the park. Trail surface ranges from old two-tracks and heavily graveled stretches to mowed lanes through open meadows and are well marked with maps at most junctions. Because of the heavy equestrian use some sections will be muddy but overall the trails keep your boots dry despite the wetlands and ponds you’ll be hiking around. Mountain bikers are prohibited from riding on the trails.
The most interesting walk is the Richardson Loop where you hike through the oak and maple forests and around the lake, the largest within the park. Hiking Richardson Loop along with a short side trip to Esler Lake is a hair over 2 miles. The perimeter of the entire trail system is a 3.5-mile walk.

From the foyer, guests flow into the main venue space, a 46x80 area with an open floor plan. With reclaimed barnwood walls, and eight custom made chandelier's with Edison bulbs, Cushing Field House is full of rustic elegance and charm. Your guests will love the option of sitting and relaxing in our cozy 20x20 sitting area with leather furniture and a real wood-burning fireplace, a 74" 4K television, and outstanding views of the venue's sprawling fields.

Cushing Field House came to fruition when one of Peter and Cushie Switzer's daughters became engaged to be married. She dreamed of hosting her celebration near the Michigan home where she grew up. Peter and Cushie, owners of a luxury construction, landscaping and home building business, drew upon their create, design, and build talents to transform their farm storage building into the charming and elegant destination it is known as today.

The Historic Ellis Barn is situated on Springfield Oaks County Park where the natural grounds surrounding the event space serve as a beautiful backdrop for your special day. The barn itself features a true gambrel roof and is a true local landmark. The Historic Ellis Barn is two stories tall and joined by a stairwell on the interior. There is also a vertical lift for guests who have limited mobility. The lower level features a dance floor and plenty of space for a seated dining experience. For a reception-style setup, the lower level can accommodate events with up to 150 guests and the upper level can accommodate 250 guests. The rental of the barn includes both levels.

The Historic Ellis Barn was originally constructed in 1884 and was part of a 78 acre Ingomar Stock Farm owned by Norman J. Ellis. This barn represents the significant period of Michigan's agricultural and transportation history. The Historic Ellis Barn has remained in the Ellis family since its construction and was recognized as a Michigan Centennial Farm.

The Historic Ellis Barn is happy to welcome in outside vendors of your choice. This allows for you to have complete control over the decor, food, flowers, photography, and much more. The wedding rental for this venue includes access to the site for a full weekend. This means you can begin setting up for your big day on Friday at noon and have until Sunday at noon to clean up. We also offer a limited number of tables and chairs for a small fee but you can still use an outside vendor if you prefer.
