A true history buff can't miss Fort Mims. It's not super exciting for kids (just being honest, here), but the site is truly significant. Montgomery Hill Baptist Church is near and is also worth a stop if you're in the area.

If you like history, here's another spot. This is one of two forts involved in the Battle of Mobile Bay. Lots of steps, but great views from the top. You can catch the ferry and ride to the other side. It's quite a drive -- a solid hour and a half -- maybe more depending on traffic. But it's one part of a GREAT day trip! Make sure you look at the sign when you turn west in Gulf Shores to make sure the Ferry is running if you're planning to ride across.

You can catch the ferry and ride to the other side. It's quite a drive -- a solid hour and a half -- maybe more depending on traffic. But it's one part of a GREAT day trip! Make sure you look at the sign when you turn west in Gulf Shores to make sure the Ferry is running if you're planning to ride across.
You can't do this just anywhere. If you go to Fort Morgan, please ride the ferry across to Fort Gaines. You can drive back up the West Side of Mobile Bay and come home via Mobile, AL.

This may be the tiniest Walmart Supercenter you've ever been to, but they manage to squeeze a lot in here. If you need something simple like a toothbrush, consider the Dollar General just down the road. :)

We love Orange Beach, AL. The drive has been made easier with the Baldwin Beach Express, and if you're willing to pay a small toll to go over the final bridge, you can be there in a hour and a half.

Maybe just slightly closer than the Alabama Beaches, Pensacola Beach is lovely as well. There is a toll to go over the last bridge, so be aware of that.
