Amusement Park

LAGOON AMUSEMENT PARK – [8 miles away] (Open late spring - mid-fall.) Lagoon is a privately owned amusement park in Farmington, Utah. It has ten roller coasters, five of which are unique; Colossus the Fire Dragon, the last Schwarzkopf Double Looping coaster still in operation in the United States; Roller Coaster, one of the oldest coasters in the world operating since 1921; Wicked, designed by Lagoon's engineering department and Werner Stengel in cooperation with ride manufacturer Zierer; BomBora, a family coaster designed in-house; and Cannibal, built in-house with one of the world's steepest drops. It has a river rapids ride, kiddie-rides, the old-fashioned "dark" or spooky rides, shows, places to eat, an old western town, and more.

[4 miles away] (Open late spring - early fall.) We love the lazy river in the summer, so refreshing. A number of fun slides for adults and teens, and plenty of kid-friendly splash pads, including a pirates cove. Miniature golf, maze, climbing rocks, picnic areas, and more. We've had two family reunions here with barbecues. But it's the lazy river that brings us back for return trips!

Sightseeing

ANTELOPE ISLAND – [15 miles away] Antelope Island State Park is a Utah state park open for year-round recreation and features an abundant wildlife population, including one of the largest free-roaming herds of American bison in the U.S. An effort to reintroduce pronghorn to the park has been a success. Other animals at the park include bighorn sheep, mule deer and a wide variety of waterfowl, wading birds and small mammals and reptiles. Highlights: 36 miles of hiking and mountain bike trails. Kayak and paddleboard rentals at the Great Salt Lake marina. Sunsets from Frary Peak. The park, at an elevation of 5,308 feet, was established in 1969 when the northern portions of the island were designated as a state park. We were able to take photography equipment and photograph the summer's solstice full moon, to see the sun and moon in the same sky from Antelope Island... it was incredible. Antelope Island is a lesser-known treasure of Layton...you'll feel like you've escaped to another world. A MUST-SEE...but... VERY IMPORTANT: Before going, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you visit their website at: https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/antelope-island/ Click on "Current Conditions" on the right-side panel. Then click on "More Conditions Information." You need to look specifically at the insect activity and any other natural hazards. You're hoping the insects are listed as "not active." Insects that are actively biting can ruin your trip. Insect repellent will help somewhat with mosquitos but NOT with biting midges. You would need a fine mesh head net or they'll leave you with miserable bites. Antelope Island is well-worth the visit, but the bugs are very intense in spring and fall. A cooler temperature, even chilly, is ironically probably a better time to go, when bugs are dormant, or else when it's hotter than 90 degrees. You could always do a car tour during bug-months and drive around and see the bison and pronghorn--like a car safari. So if the bugs are active you can still get great views, just stay in your car. We've been to Antelope Island many times and have had some awesome experiences, but we've also had a few times where we came home covered with itchy bites on our scalps and necks. SO...go when its chilly enough to wear a coat, like a sunny day in late February or early March, or else plan ahead for the specific bugs you'll encounter. And you might need a carwash. But still it's so unique it's definitely worth the hassle if you're up for the challenge.

GREAT SALT LAKE SHORELAND PRESERVE – [6 miles away] Great Place to view the Marshes on the edge of the Great salt Lake. Place for Bird watching. An easy walk on the wooden boardwalk with two viewing structures. Unimpeded views on the mountains. Several signs letting you know the history, bird population and purpose for this preserve. Clean Bathrooms, but no other services. Bring water and binoculars. Great place for 1 to 2 hours of viewing the area. Best times to see wild life are early in the day or late in the day, before sunset when all the birds and wild life are feeding. Many plants adapted to the higher salt content of the water running off from the mountains. Gorgeous views from the "castle" about halfway down the walk. Great for folks who really don't know much about why we need this land for birds and animals migrating from Way up north to way down in Central America

ADAMS CANYON TRAIL – [2 miles to entrance] Great semi-challenging hike with a waterfall, streams to walk through, and beautiful views. To get there, ask Google to navigate to: Adams Canyon Lower Falls. Bring drinking water and good shoes for hiking. Can be popular on weekends. Great place to view the sunset. Don’t get caught after dark without a flashlight. (Think absolute darkness in the wilderness.) Plan around daylight. The waterfall is a great reward and the mist is refreshing!

JUST 2 MINUTES AWAY! Spring, Summer, Fall: We love to go walking and running along the water in the mornings. We see baby ducks, squirrels, geese, waterfalls, and just enjoy nature. Plenty of places to picnic, but you must haul away your own trash. WINTER: The park has an AMAZING Christmas light display with hundreds of lit-up animals, characters, and trees. There's always a line around the block. What we do is pick up some take-out and eat in the car while we wait. The line also moves faster than you'd think. Then you drive through with headlights off and enjoy the show...don't forget to play holiday tunes! You could also park and walk through the display on foot.

LAYTON SURF ‘N SWIM- [1 mile away] Great day at the pool when everyone is enjoying themselves. Shallow enough for young children to play in the water. You can also rent a tube and ride the 'waves' that come on every so often. The atmosphere is super relaxing and laid back. Super fun to book for your group! Never done an escape room? You're put into a "story" of being trapped somewhere and you have a limited time to get out. Use ingenuity, teamwork, and smarts to escape! Note: You cannot just show up. Must book your room on their website.

LAYTON VIETNAM MEMORIAL – [1 mile away] This is an incredible memorial to the 58,317 young men and women lost to the Vietnam War. It offers a solemn place and atmosphere of closure for those still trying to make it home. There are 8 benches along the walk-way, each dedicated to one of the women on the Wall. It is the fulfillment of a promise that a Vietnam Veteran made when he left Vietnam in 1967 - that the world will never forget what we did there - the dedication, loyalty and service with integrity of each and every service man or woman who served during the Vietnam War. All names are on the Wall - same panel and location as the original in D.C. You can arrange for a Vietnam Veteran to meet you at the Wall to talk to you about it development and construction and to help you find a loved one or acquaintance on the Wall. Go to the Layton City, Utah website and find out how to arrange a tour or a veteran to join with you at the Wall. It is emotional to many - it is absolutely incredible.

This is a greasy spoon--kind of a dive--that the locals LOVE. It's especially good for breakfast. It serves famous gigantic scones and honey-butter, omelets, eggs, bacon, and traditional burgers and fries. Located right next to Burger Stop, it gets a lot of patronage from locals who like the casual atmosphere and the scones, which are cheap, huge, hot, and delicious. Usually a small wait depending on your arrival time.

Utah has gone wild with these custom soda shops, where you choose your base soda (Dr. Pepper, Coke, Pepsi, Rootbeer, Sprite etc.) and add mix-ins like cherry, vanilla, raspberry, cream, coconut, and more. This particular joint is one of the originals, right next to Cafe Sills, a well-known Layton greasy spoon and Burger Stop, a Layton favorite 50's burger/shake shop that hosts huge car shows in the summer. It is a TINY place, and most people use the drive-thru. Plan on four cars in front of you at least; it's very popular. Or you can go into the shop which is sometimes faster. They also sell homemade cookies in various flavors--choc chip, peanut butter, sugar, etc. that are delicious. Definitely a fun pit stop for a sweet pick-me-up.
