LAGOON AMUSEMENT PARK – [8 miles away] (Open late spring - mid-fall.) Lagoon is a privately owned amusement park in Farmington, Utah. It has ten roller coasters, five of which are unique; Colossus the Fire Dragon, the last Schwarzkopf Double Looping coaster still in operation in the United States; Roller Coaster, one of the oldest coasters in the world operating since 1921; Wicked, designed by Lagoon's engineering department and Werner Stengel in cooperation with ride manufacturer Zierer; BomBora, a family coaster designed in-house; and Cannibal, built in-house with one of the world's steepest drops. It has a river rapids ride, kiddie-rides, the old-fashioned "dark" or spooky rides, shows, places to eat, an old western town, and more.

ANTELOPE ISLAND – [15 miles away] Antelope Island State Park is a Utah state park open for year-round recreation and features an abundant wildlife population, including one of the largest free-roaming herds of American bison in the U.S. An effort to reintroduce pronghorn to the park has been a success. Other animals at the park include bighorn sheep, mule deer and a wide variety of waterfowl, wading birds and small mammals and reptiles. Highlights: 36 miles of hiking and mountain bike trails. Kayak and paddleboard rentals at the Great Salt Lake marina. Sunsets from Frary Peak. The park, at an elevation of 5,308 feet, was established in 1969 when the northern portions of the island were designated as a state park. We were able to take photography equipment and photograph the summer's solstice full moon, to see the sun and moon in the same sky from Antelope Island... it was incredible. Antelope Island is a lesser-known treasure of Layton...you'll feel like you've escaped to another world. A MUST-SEE...but...

Click on "Current Conditions" on the right-side panel. Then click on "More Conditions Information." You need to look specifically at the insect activity and any other natural hazards. You're hoping the insects are listed as "not active." Insects that are actively biting can ruin your trip. Insect repellent will help somewhat with mosquitos but NOT with biting midges. You would need a fine mesh head net or they'll leave you with miserable bites.
Antelope Island is well-worth the visit, but the bugs are very intense in spring and fall. A cooler temperature, even chilly, is ironically probably a better time to go, when bugs are dormant, or else when it's hotter than 90 degrees. You could always do a car tour during bug-months and drive around and see the bison and pronghorn--like a car safari. So if the bugs are active you can still get great views, just stay in your car. We've been to Antelope Island many times and have had some awesome experiences, but we've also had a few times where we came home covered with itchy bites on our scalps and necks. SO...go when its chilly enough to wear a coat, like a sunny day in late February or early March, or else plan ahead for the specific bugs you'll encounter. And you might need a carwash. But still it's so unique it's definitely worth the hassle if you're up for the challenge.

Located right next to Burger Stop, it gets a lot of patronage from locals who like the casual atmosphere and the scones, which are cheap, huge, hot, and delicious. Usually a small wait depending on your arrival time.

If you like healthy but delicious food, Zupas is the best around. Delicious gourmet salads with the freshest greens, fruits, and veggies. This particular joint is one of the originals, right next to Cafe Sills, a well-known Layton greasy spoon and Burger Stop, a Layton favorite 50's burger/shake shop that hosts huge car shows in the summer. It is a TINY place, and most people use the drive-thru. Plan on four cars in front of you at least; it's very popular. Or you can go into the shop which is sometimes faster. They also sell homemade cookies in various flavors--choc chip, peanut butter, sugar, etc. that are delicious. Definitely a fun pit stop for a sweet pick-me-up.
