A dramatic stretch of coastline south of Kessingland where the cliffs are fairly tall and keep eroding. You can park the car along the road that leads into the village (what’s left of it) and admire the ruins of the large medieval church with a smaller church built inside them. Then follow the road to the sea. It ends abruptly, but you can ignore the signs claiming there is not public right of way. This is a permissive footpath and a popular route – though do keep back from the cliff top as a few more feet of land disappear into the sea each year. Turn left, follow the cliff top path and after about a mile you will see Benacre Broad on your left, a freshwater lagoon (that used to be) separated from the sea by a narrow stretch of beach with a bird hide. Unfortunately, we have found that it is not possible to walk around the lake as the land is private and fenced off. However, at low tide you can walk all the way to Southwold along the beach which is about 4 miles from Covehithe.

A 45 minutes’ drive from Pakefield. One of the best things about Norwich is its pedestrianised city-centre with a high concentration of good quality shops; independent ones as well as chains. We like the game shop and the second hand book shop in the quaint cobbled street of Elm Hill and the Wilkinson’s loose leaf tea and coffee shop (5 Lobster Lane), which is situated in another attractive historic part of Norwich. The medieval Cathedral with its cloisters and gardens is also a must, as well as Norwich Castle.

The late 3rd century 'Saxon Shore' fort at Burgh Castle was built as part of the Roman network of coastal defences, and probably abandoned just over a hundred years later. Three of its imposing stone walls survive, almost to their original height, making this one of the best preserved Roman monuments in Britain. The fourth wall collapsed into the surrounding marshes a long time ago. The land around the fort is a wildlife haven and offers panoramic views over Breydon Water. We like to walk along the river towards the Eels Foot Inn.

Quieter than the neighbouring town of Southwold, this pretty Georgian seaside village is the perfect place for a bucket and spade holiday, followed by a hearty pub lunch or cream tea or a quiet, romantic break during the winter months. The village also has a long sand and shingle beach backed by grassy dunes and surrounded by marsh and heathland. The nature reserve, which follows the River Blyth estuary, covers over 1,000 acres, combining mudflats, meadows and marsh and is home to otters, deer and a wide range of bird species.

One of the most elegant country houses in East Anglia, Felbrigg Hall is a place of surprises and delights. It is a mixture of opulence and homeliness where each room reflects Felbrigg’s vibrant history, from the stained-glass windows in the Great Hall to Queen Mary's teapot in the Drawing Room. The Chinese Bedroom showcases Felbrigg’s rich global collections, including luxury exports traded by the East India Company, and the eclectic displays in the Cabinet Room show collections amassed on a European ‘Grand Tour’. Outside, the decorative and productive walled garden is a gardener's delight. Flowers from the garden decorate the Hall, whilst allotments in the walled garden provide fruit and vegetables for the Squire's Pantry. You can enjoy watching the hens pecking wherever they wish, with only the sound of the busy bees in the flowers. The rolling landscape park with a lake, 211 hectares (520 acres) of woods and waymarked trails is a great place to explore nature and wildlife on this bountiful estate. With buggy friendly surfaces on main visitor routes, families can enjoy a relaxing day out.

Grime’s Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. This grassy lunar landscape of 400 pits was first named Grim’s Graves by the Anglo-Saxons. It was not until one of them was excavated in 1870 that they were identified as flint mines dug over 5,000 years ago. A small exhibition area illustrates the history of this fascinating site. Visitors can descend 9 metres (30 ft) by ladder into one excavated shaft to see the jet-black flint. Set amid the distinctive Breckland heath landscape, Grime’s Graves is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a habitat for rare plants and fauna. Please note that children under 7 years of age are not allowed into the mine shaft and visitors should be advised to wear sensible flat shoes.
