While the historic tavern provides an easy to find locator for your GPS, the real reason to come here is to view the impressive waterfall on the Potomac River. This 1/3 mile hike takes you along the once thriving B&O Canal and on to an island on the Potomac River where you'll be surrounded by roaring falls and stunning scenery. In the afternoon, you might be lucky to see kayaks braving the white water. Usually a $10 parking fee.

Quiet, pretty beach on Chesapeake Bay that's connected to a boardwalk that will take you 1/2 mile right into the heart of Chesapeake Beach, a charming bay-side town. Parking fees are pretty steep during the summer peak season, so try to visit in late fall, winter, or early spring for free parking and solitude.

Natural paradise that's lovely to visit any time of the year. While fall is most popular due to the changing colors, many avoid it during this season because of the crowds. Spring, summer and winter are rather quiet, affording plentiful wildlife sightings (we saw a black bear on our last visit) and incredible viewpoints. Wrap up your visit with dinner in Charlottesville, VA, a fun college town with trendy restaurants and bars and a surprisingly hipster scene.
