Sauna

Hands down three best saunas in Helsinki. All sporting a really different feel. I regularly go to all three of them, a bit depending on the days mood :)
The best swimming hall in Helsinki! Opened in 1928 and open every day, Yrjönkatu swimming hall, drawn by architect Väinö Vähäkallio, has been chosen as one of the most beautiful swimming pools in the world by the BBC. Men and women have different days for bathing; women Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, men in the days between. At 14.00 each day the upper floor opens, and that is what makes this place what it is! Enjoy Finnish delicacies and try their traditional Jallusima-drink overlooking the pool! Heaven in central Helsinki.

Japanese-Finnish Architect couple Nene Tsuboi and Tuomas Toivonen opened up Kulttuurisauna (Culture Sauna) in 2013. And it is exactly what you could expect and more, a marble of tranquility and Japanese-Finnish aesthetics. I usually try to head there around 18:00 for the last three hours that it is open (no new visitors let in after 20:00) to get the most calming and contemplative atmosphere. Tuomas, who also is a musician, usually plays a soundscape of slowed down of Orthodox Christian churchbells for the last hours.

The punk sauna of Helsinki! Starting of as an anarchistic project Sompasauna is the one and only free-for-all community sauna located far out on the southern tip of Sompasaari. Everything works by community, meaning you should always help and chop some firewood when you get there or bring fresh water to the site, so that no-one has to do more just for the relaxations of others. Sompasauna is a jewel in the ever-so-bureaucratic Finland. It is a good 30min walk from Kalasatama (or 10min by electric scooter ;) but so worth it. Try to go here a few good hours before the sun sets. The walk back can otherwise bee a bit eery and cold.

Food scene

My favourite pizza-place in Helsinki. All pizzas are excellent, but if you want the real deal go for the beetroot goatcheese pizza! Free live events everyday ranging from small classical ensembles to poetry-jams and underground artists.

SAUNA!

I've linked the three best saunas in Helsinki! Whatever your take is, don't miss the essential Finnish experience. For the hasty and hubbub traveler Yrjönkatu is your thing! For the Berlin-lover, Sompasauna, and for the philosopher Kulttuurisauna.

Say Hi! to Finnish people!

Finns are know to be a bit reserved. I would say that is changing, or at least let's change that! Finns are very warm and helpful people if you just talk to them. We might look a bit deer-in-headlights when first spoken to, but love to help and are proud of our city! When you break the ice, you will have a friend for life.
