Sightseeing

Providence is Rhode Island's "Creative Capital"--a charming little city full of arts and culture destinations and great restaurants. In the warmer months, check out the WaterFire schedule and catch it if you can! Providence is home to several major institutions with state of the art performance venues and museums, including Brown University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Johnson and Wales University, and RI School of Design. AS220 is a hub of creativity downtown--check out their website to find performances, galleries, and classes in acting, dance, visual arts and more.

Awesome place to see a lighthouse up close and waves crashing on huge rocks you can climb all over. Also large fields overlooking the Atlantic, perfect for a picnic.

This is the beach we bring the kiddos to--nestled between breaker walls in Narragansett Bay, the water is pretty shallow and the waves are tame. There is a playground, pavilion with showers, restrooms, snack bar, souvenirs. Family friendly to the max.

This is the quiet beach. Limited parking, so get there early. If parking's full, continue south to Misquamicuit in Westerly or head back north towards Scarborough in Narragansett. By far the prettiest and most peaceful public beach in RI. Not great for swimming because the rip tide is usually pretty strong. Lots of folx like to go quahogging here too.

This is a town beach, so it's a little more pricey than the state beaches because you have to pay to park and to get on the beach. Only beach with lifeguards where you can also surf in RI, so it's a great place to rent a board (usually someone is right there on the beach renting them, even giving lessons) and try it out! A lovely walk, about a mile, that ends in one of Nikki's favorite spots in RI, a quiet inlet that's really sweet around sunset.

If you want to celebrate, you cannot go wrong at Los Andes! This is the best restaurant in RI, and everybody knows it--so you should call for a reservation. Indoor and outdoor seating, fresh and innovative contemporary Peruvian/Bolivian inspired cuisine, excellent wine list, and live music sometimes too. You can also grab a seat at the bar to eat.

Olneyville NY System is a local legend--they are open late night, perfect spot to hit after a night out on the town in Providence. Get at least two "all the way". A side of fries with salt and white vinegar and coffee milk makes it a complete meal. And please, have mercy, do not ask for ketchup on your weiner.
