The Cathedral is to many people here a symbol of the city, of the region and of its people. It was, for centuries, the tallest building of the western world. It has impressive tainted glass, an astronomical clock. It is possible to climb up there

It is truly impossible to visit Strasbourg without wandering in the streets of La Petite France (Small France)... Romantic small streets, little canal, busy restaurants, ... The name of the area sounds lovely, but it actually refers to the hospital where soldiers were being quarantined ... so much for the romanticism... ;-) ... but really the area is lovely ....

The Grande Ile (Great Island) or also called Ilot Sacré... is the "extreme city centre"... it is the part of the centre that is limited by the Ill river on one side, and the canals on the other side. it is two tram stops from the flat, or you can exit at Place de la République / Place Broglie / Place de l'Homme de Fer... Most of the ancient historical architecture is located there (Cathedral, Petite France...) ... Very pleasant to wander in the streets, do your shopping... Food scene

It is possible to have bad food in Strasbourg, but one must be really unlucky ... I have included in this list my favorite restaurants, which i all tried personally... mostly in the city center. You have to try FlammKuch if you have never tried, this is probably the most local cheap-eat you can get: some very thin crusty dowe with a thin layer of cottage cheese-cream-bacon and cheese (restaurant customise it nowadays... ) Another extremely local speciality is the "Choucroute" .. It is marinated cabbage (not sweet like the American or German sauerkraut), cooked with smoked meats, or fish, or duck in some kosher options... The city also has a good scene for French and gastronomical cuisine. It may get complicated to eat local/traditional food if you are vegetarian or vegan ... If that's the case for you, I recommend that you try more some "exotic" restaurant (Lebanese, Indian...)... never hesitate to ask us for further options
In the past, sick people would pay their hospital with wine, or rich philanthropists would donate wineyards to the hospital... From that ancient time, there is a world-famous cellar that is still located in the (former) premises of the hospital. You can see there the eldest barrel of wine still in use (from the XVth century) : last time someone sipped a gglass of that wine, was at the end of World War II :-) You can also discover some excellent wines of the area... Local producers still have an agreement with the Hispital cellars and are selling there some of their best wine under an anonymous label ... So you can't know who exactly has made the wine (unless your palate is at professional level!) but you can be sur of the quality !

Gastronomie

The restaurant is located in the immediate vicinity of the city centre. The atmosphere is very clear, and simple, all in white restaurant. It has a small cart with seasonal products. There may be a local/alsatian touch on some dishes, but the restaurant qualifies more as French cuisine rather than local. They work as a family, with father and daughter ... The set up of the plates is very aesthetic. Excellent wine suggestions, out of the beaten tracks. You have to plan for 40 euro for starter+ main + dessert (drinks on top) which is really okay, given the quality of the food.
