Food scene

Scribner’s is an American fare restaurant and a cocktail bar with magnificent mountain views, a modern aesthetic and cozy vibes. The menu changes daily to incorporate seasonal ingredients and won’t disappoint. It’s also a great place to curl up by the fire with a cocktail on your way back from the slopes! In the summertime, the hotel also has a pool party on Saturdays and Sundays. For $25, you get access to a (well-heated) pool with music and a limited snack and drink menu. New in winter 2021, there is also an ice rink with great Hunter Mountain views. For $20 a person, you can make a skating reservation on their website!

If you’re celebrating an occasion or just feeling fancy, this is the place to go for dinner. The chef is rocking a well-deserved Michelin star, and the woody hillside location makes for pretty views and a romantic setting. And still just a quick drive from Main Street, Tannersville. Dinner is on the high-end pricewise, but their weekend brunch is more accessible and absolutely top notch. We highly recommend it!

A Tannersville must-eat, even for the herbivores out there. Take a look through the many tasty house specialty burgers and if you don’t like that, have a crack at customizing your own. Emily’s favorite is the vegetarian grilled eggplant patty with goat’s milk gouda and yogurt harissa sauce. John sticks to the classic. They also have locally made ice cream and sorbets to satisfy your sweet tooth, and a selection of breakfast sandwiches - though there’s nothing wrong with a burger for breakfast!

Saloon style bar and restaurant with a variety of candies and gourmet goodies for sale. The menu is dressed up pub food with decent vegetarian options as well. Excellent beer selection and a variety of candies and goodies for sale. Great for a cozy, intimate dinner or a post-ski brew on your way home. Or both.

A solid stand-by for brunch, lunch and dinner on Main Street in Tannersville, with locally sourced food and a rotating menu. Lots of outdoor seating and a decent bar for a laid-back evening.

If you’re looking for the good ole Tex-Mex food you know and love, look no further. The food’s definitely worth your time, but the margarita’s nothing to write home about.

Pop in for the standard coffee shop soup/salad/sandwich, but stay for the donuts! Do you really think you can make a trip to Tannersville WITHOUT having a fresh, made-to-order s’mores donut? The answer is no, you really can’t. Also a great spot just to hang, with comfy couches and relaxed vibe.

Just down the mountain in Palenville, this spot serves unbeatable breakfast and lunch sandwiches (no, really - UNBEATABLE). Note that they stop serving their breakfast menu at 11:30, though if you miss the cut off, you’ll quickly forget as you sink your teeth into their Kaaterskill Panino instead. Perfect after a day swimming in Kaaterskill Creek!

Known as the “Gramercy Tavern” of the Catskills, this spot is also great for an occasion -- top notch food with an intimate atmosphere. You may want a reservation for the dining room, but the bar room can serve walk-ins and feels a bit more laid back if that’s what you’re into.

Sightseeing

Kaaterskill Falls is tallest two-stage waterfall in New York, and the trailhead that leads to it is just a 10 minute drive from the cottage. You can go to the parking lot just below the falls in Haines Falls or you can park at the trailhead off of 23A and hike just over a mile up the bottom of the falls. In the summer, it's a great spot for a swim! Parking off of 23A is limited, especially on weekends, and warning that the trail is VERY popular, so if crowds aren't your thing, opt for another trail.. maybe you'll even stumble across your own secret swimming hole, which abound in the area!

Bars and Breweries

Main Street, Hunter. These guys are pouring the classics in addition to rotating and local flavors each week, and the food is standard pub fare. A solid choice for a few beers and a few laughs within minutes of the cottage.

A scenic drive around the mountains will further reward you on arrival to the beautiful grounds of the West Kill Brewing company. The variety in West Kill’s beer list trumps all others in the region and uses ingredients grown locally to produce delicious and interesting flavors that vary seasonally. The company is new and does not yet have a full kitchen, but snacks like soft pretzels and cheese boards are available. Occasionally food trucks are serving the property as well and they have regular community events - check their social media for the current offerings. Definitely worth the drive!

Hikes

Just five minutes down Platte Clove Rd (the road you’re staying on!) is the trailhead that leads to Huckleberry Point, a rock outcropping high on the side of a mountain with a majestic view of the valley below as the mountains sweep away to the flat plain in the distance. The hike is of middling difficulty, 4.5 miles roundtrip. It rolls up and down throughout, but the biggest uphill section is at the beginning, meaning that you’ll wind up with a nice downhill at the end.

Commonly known as the Catskills’ most challenging hike, this is a 24 mile loop trail that goes over 5 of the range’s 35 high peaks. Obviously there’s no pressure to do it all, but you can always go out and back for a peak or two, right? The trailhead is just a few minutes up from the cottage on Platte Clove Rd and is well marked by signs.

If you're coming here, you probably know that Hunter Mountain is the area's top ski resort! But did you also know that you can take a scenic skyride up to the top during the warmer months and go ziplining?? It's an all-season resort worth checking out any time of year!
