Even so, all ages come to explore this model main street where two indie bookstores thrive (Pegasus Opens a New Window. and Diesel). Extreme shoppers and companions of extreme shoppers should be warned: walking Rockridge will easily swallow an afternoon. There are home goods (Maison D’Etre . ) to baked goods (Market Hall Bakery), vintage (Pretty Penny, Lost & Found ) to jewels (Pavé Opens a New Window. ) to shoes (Tootsies). The inside inside scoop The 2,000 hand-painted tiles in the Rockridge BART station form a mural that depicts the Oakland hills firestorm of 1991 as remembered by the survivors. Grab a pie at Zachary’s. to participate in the cornmeal-crust pizza warfare between this Rockridge institution and its San Francisco nemesis, Little Star. It’s a real thing.

Restaurant

Millennium is the vegan Mecca. It continues it's tradition of unique delicious, plant-based cuisine that is known throughout the country. This rustic-chic space is laid-back and unfussy, with lots of dark wood, a patio for alfresco dining and a crowd of young families and professionals attended by welcoming servers. While dedicated vegans are sure to swoon, even hardcore carnivores might reconsider the lifestyle after a dose of Chef/owner Eric Tucker's culinary creativity, showcased best on a five-course "Taste of Millennium" menu. Roasted pumpkin tamales with pumpkin seed pastor and cashew nut crema are knockouts, as are the crunchy king trumpet fritters with chili-persimmon jam. Even the bar is unique and wonderful! If you're vegan, you will be in paradise. If you're not, you won't care . . . 'cause it's all delicious. You must come see the vegan restaurant with Michelin stars!

Arts + History + Natural Sciences = 1 kick-ass museum. The OMCA is deeply rooted in the Oakland community offering a number of educational and outreach programs. On top of that, they throw a helluva party every Friday with drinks, food, dancing and half off entrance fees. Tip: Check out the notorious Black Panther leader Huey P. Newtons wicker chair in their gallery, originally proposed for the Alameda Courthouse. You can sit in it, too; contemplate the movement and its complicated founder.
