This is a nice, family-oriented beach on Chesapeake Bay. Besides the beach, it has a fishing pier, a pavilion for live performances (when scheduled), a great playground for kids, and a long, wide sidewalk for strolling along the beach. It is not commercialized like Virginia Beach. Admission and parking are free.

The History Museum provides a look at 400+ years of history, from Native American times, through English settlement, the Revolution, Civil War, both world wars, and the economic transformation from the sea (fish, oysters, crabs) to the stars, complete with NASA and astronauts. The film "Hidden Figures" was based here at Hampton's NASA facility.

Sightseeing

Located in Newport News about 15 minutes from here, the Virginia Living Museum is home to more than 250 species of animals and plants found throughout Virginia, including reptiles, mammals, birds and fish. Experience the Chesapeake Bay’s diversity year round at the VLM. Explore a steamy cypress swamp and a cool mountain stream. You can see aquatic and terrestrial frogs and salamanders, loggerhead sea turtle, beavers, otters, foxes, raccoons, bobcats, deer and red wolves. Birds, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and more! Most of the mammals and birds on exhibit could not survive in the wild because they were injured, orphaned or born in captivity.

Ft. Monroe is a national monument, formerly an Army base. It is one of the oldest forts in America. It has a moat and a high, thick wall surrounding the historic fort. You can walk along the top of the wall. There is a wonderful museum in it called the Casemate Museum. Entrance to the fort and museum are free! One of my favorite places on the Peninsula.
