Local Eats & Treats

Best of the Valley!
Artichoke and asiago cream cheese dip!!! Although known for their local craft brews, Squatters started my love affair with ALL artichoke dips way back in 1989- NO spinach in this version, browned in the wood-fired oven, and served with bread instead of chips!!! It is very rich, though, so practically a meal in itself. 20 minute drive or 40 min TRAX ride to downtown SLC from Sandy.

Sooooo, hopefully they'll change the main pic of the fire extinguishers soon, but at Kou, you BBQ the delicious meat the chefs have prepared for you on a grill at your table yourself, so maybe it actually IS the best pic to display?? My son highly recommends the Beef Bulgogi, and recent Korean guests told us this place is the BEST! Just 11 minutes away.

Authentic & Delicious Chinese Restaurant! Hands down the best szechuan garlic roasted green beans ever!! Dinner combos come with an insane amount of food and are reasonably priced. Take out is easy as this place is just 4 minutes from our place. Sesame chicken and orange chicken are popular favorites.

Great comfort food like Hatch Chile Mac n Cheese, shrimp po boy sandwiches, & build your own burgers with truffle fries. They have a full bar here too, & excellent entrees. Love the miso salmon. Owners Kris & Ken are super friendly and make everyone feel like a local.

Best Greek breakfast/lunch place around. Reasonably priced, quick service, and small-town feel local atmosphere. The breakfast potatoes are the bomb (or Fire, I guess you might say..). They have a fun bookshelf wall that also features some unique antiques, too.

Grocery

We shop Smith's the most, but all options listed will get you what you need.
Biggest grocery store chain in the Salt Lake Valley and where we usually shop. It's part of the Kroger family of stores. Lots of foodie options like a gourmet cheese case, a variety of Kombucha and specialty beer, ale and hard seltzer options (all you can get outside of a state liquor store here in Utah), and a salad bar and daily prepared fresh sushi case (which isn't too bad for grocery store sushi). It's 1.9 miles, or 6 mins away. It does get busy during ski season as it's on the way to the slopes in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Reasonably priced too.

Closest grocery store to our home. It has all the basics, and prices are OK. Better beer and seltzer selection than one might think (We recommend Kona Brewing Company Long Board Ale). Produce is pretty good and reasonably priced. Other items are a little pricier. It is not busy and there are plenty of parking spaces as this store is more convenient than a local favorite. Store hasn't been updated or remodeled in like 50 years. They have Kombucha and other probiotic drinks, but they are located all the way in the back right of the store next to the produce section, so not easy to find. Great for small things since it is so close and not crowded. 1 mile/5 mins away.

The largest Walmart mega superstore near us. This one is newer and has a HUGE selections of all things "megastore." We don't usually shop here for groceries, but you can if you want "one-stop shopping." Lots of restaurants and a Lowes at this location (Quarry Bend) as well.

The "ultimate" in local foodie heaven, in so far as that exists in a Utah suburb, but you will pay for it. They have a "foodie club card" that you can rack up points on for discounts if you're staying a longer while, but not likely to help the budget if you are not. It's worth checking out if you want gourmet bakery, but it's too rich for our blood most of the time.

There are two Dollar Tree stores that I use. One is in a strip mall on 700 East and 9400 South and the other is at 7202 S 1000 E in a strip mall next to Dick's Sporting Goods. They have affordable travel-friendly sized stuff of all kinds, including bath and body items, snacks, and condiments. I also like the store for disposable family party items, gift wrap and cards.

What can I say about Trader Joe's, except when you know, you know. This place is one of a kind. Fun gourmet treats & snacks, boxed salads, frozen dinners, unique beverages (sadly no wine or spirits in Utah), & an AWESOME floral selection.

Whole Foods, Supplements and Natural Remedies

This is my favorite "whole foods" type store that is NOT "Whole Foods (Whole Paycheck)." You will find all of your supplements, herbs, and healthy bulk foods you can't find anywhere else here. Prices are reasonable and the store clerks are very helpful. They have GT's Kombucha on tap and bottled, as well as many other probiotic drinks. They have many "green" beauty products and a few different lines of quality essential oils that are reasonably priced if you are into that kind of stuff. The grocery and produce portions of the store are VERY SMALL. We mainly shop here for supplements and reasonably priced large bottles of Kombucha. They are closed on Sundays.

Recreation and Nature

Gorgeous 360 degree views of the Salt Lake Valley and Wasatch mountains, picnic pavilion, running track, playground, baseball diamond, lighted tennis courts and brand new pickleball courts that will be completed in the summer of 2021. We have tennis rackets and tennis balls available for you to use at no charge if you like.

Easy half mile hike to beautiful views of the entire Salt Lake valley and a pretty lake frequented by many birds, ducks and occasional deer and moose. If you are an ambitious hiker or snowshoe enthusiast, the trail leads higher to a beautiful waterfall that is just under 3 miles up the canyon trail. Locals hike this trail year-round, and the trailhead is less than 10 minutes away. Shoe/boot spikes are recommended in the winter months for traction.

This small neighborhood park is a popular sledding spot. There is a neighborhood access walkway down Riggs Dr., so kiddos can avoid higher traffic streets when walking to and from the park.

Ski Rentals, Gear and Discounted Lift Tickets

This is our favorite ski rental shop! They have multiple locations near both Cottonwood canyons and in Park City and Deer Valley. They offer a 20% discount if you reserve your equipment online via their website ( www.skinsee.com ). The Fort Union location in Cottonwood Heights is their largest store, and the 9400 South and 700 East store is a close second for inventory. What's nice is you can rent from ANY store and return to ANY store (just like Redbox, if you've ever rented a DVD from their kiosk!) so it's SUPER convenient. Daily rentals with online discount range from $25-45, so a BIG savings over renting at the resorts. They also have season rentals for around $200 (not the nicest Demo skis, though) if you plan on staying long enough to use all of your IKON pass days. Season rentals go quick, and can be reserved as early as August in the pre-season. They also have discounted lift tickets for most resorts if you don't have an IKON pass. The larger stores have a decent selection of ski clothing (although pricey if you're not shopping a sale). All stores have a good selection of goggles and sunglasses throughout the year. Oh, and they also have an app you can download to get special sale prices and rack up rewards points!!

PIZZA

I created a separate Pizza category, cause, well, it's pizza. And this is a dream pizza joint for menu selection. It's authentic (not typical for Utah). And again, it's PIZZA, & you're on vacation, or workcation, & you're pulling an all nighter. The Pie is at the top. It's in Midvale, which is just north of Sandy.
