Bookstores

It's a bookstore and a flower shop in Rosendale. Go down the street to the 1850 House for a bite to eat, check out the bookstore, and see a movie at the Rosendale Cinema.

In addition to a lot of local produce, Adams has a good selection of cheeses. It's a bit of the schlep, but if you're near Kingston, you can stop on the way back.

If you plan to buy meat, this is definitely the place to go. And it's open 24/7, like an automat. Just bring a credit card.

If you plan to eat fish, make the trip to New Paltz. This is only place where you can get really top-grade seafood. They're also friendly and helpful. There's also a restaurant next door. (While you're in New Paltz, which is a little college town, sit on the patio at Huckleberry's and have a drink.)

Drinks

(This is not what it looks like. Like on website for the actual photo.) This is an old inn that was restored a few years ago. There's a patio in the back where you can sit and have drinks. And it's in Rosendale, an interesting little town. The 1850 Inn is just down the street from Postmark Books. There's also a great movie theater in Rosendale.

Sights

WALKING. Most of the land surrounding our house is private. Feel free to walk to walk up Peak Farm Road. And, of course, all the other roads are public. The one pretty good hiking trail is the O&W rail trail. You can pick it up at the old train station at the intersection of Route 213 and Lucas Avenue (County Road 1). A few miles northwest of us is the Ashokan Reservoir, the main source of NYC's water. You can reach it by traveling a few miles NW on Route 213 until it ends (at the reservoir). Turn left, and you'll see a small parking area. You can hike across the reservoir. HIKING By far the best hiking, but farther away, is in the high peaks of the Catskills. Especially Slide Mountain (two routes) and Hunter Mountain (many, ranging from difficult to one assisted by the ski lift – which operates in the summer as well as winter). You'll find a map in the folder on the dining room table. PHOENICIA Phoenicia is a great little town for wandering around and imagining that it's 1966. There's a place to begin a long tubing ride in Phoenicia. There's also a great breakfast place called Sweet Sue's. Try the pancakes. D&H (Delaware and Hudson) Canal. A really excellent small museum in High Falls. This canal was built (just after the Erie Canal) to bring Pennsylvania coal to NYC, and brought commercial significance to this region. They give tours of the old canal. GOLF. Stone Dock golf course is a nice 9-holer in High Falls. Kingston has two short 9-holers: Alapaha (with driving range, but the course itself isn't much)… and Green Acres, a pretty nice course. Nearest regulation 18-hole course is Apple Greens in New Paltz (40 minute drive).
