The former royal bastide town is perched on a hilltop overlooking the valley of the Boudouyssou. The almost perfectly preserved bourg is surrounded by its ramparts; it has a small central square, and an interesting belfry with a lunar clock.

Located between Bergerac in the North and Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the South, the Royal Country House of Villeréal, founded in 1267 by Alphonse de Poitiers, offers a typical structure of these "new towns" built in the Middle Ages in the South West of France : its square at the angles, which still houses the commercial activity of the village, and its streets at right angles over which coexist wood sides and facades of gilded stone. In front of the astonishing hall of the XVIth S, with imposing volumes and solid oak pillars, the fortified church (XIII S) draws its two towers capped with turrets.
