Food Scene

At the last count, Gordon Ramsay had 14 restaurants in London and an even more fluid number overseas, so you're probably unlikely to meet him nursing a pint in this one-time watering hole by the Thames. In fact, you're unlikely to find anyone at the bar these days, which has dwindled while the dining side of things continues to expand. The menu here is hardly pushing any gastronomic boundaries, but so long as dishes such as scallops with rosemary mash and crisp pancetta are competently made, no-one's complaining. Vegetarians always have interesting options (perhaps orecchiette with roasted ceps, squash and pecorino).

This enduring eatery on the Mosaic Building’s sunny piazza is aimed at Limehouse locals who do give a ‘figa’ about value. Behind the contemporary design flourishes (all shiny surfaces & devilishly uncomfortable chairs) lurks an ‘Italian to the core’, serving up giant helpings of all the old faithfuls & more besides. Vast bowlfuls of orecchiette alla barese (minced beef, artichoke & aubergine) or penne all’arrabbiata (around a tenner a go) are ‘secondo-sized’, although half-portions are available. This is unashamed, ‘guilty pleasure’ eating: decidedly passé avocado con gamberetti, prosciutto e melone, pollo sorprese, cassata & profiteroles are irresistible 70s throwbacks.

"Summertime fun" is guaranteed at this branch of the Gaucho chain, especially when its alfresco waterfront space is rocking. In the less clement seasons, step inside, sit back in a cowhide chair and peruse the South American wine list with its multitude of hearty Malbecs and subtler Torrontes whites (many offered by the carafe). As for the food, "an Argentinian restaurant that can't do good steak is like the Shard's window cleaners not liking heights", so allow the well-informed waiters to explain the various cuts available. Lomo (fillet) and ancho (rib-eye) are popular, although we like the added flavour of spiral-cut churrasco, marinated in garlic, parsley and olive oil.

Drinks & Nightlife

Craft Beer Co. You probably know the drill by now. A big long bar filled with more kegs and casks than you could possibly sample in one session. This simple but glorious idea is continued here at the chain's eighth branch, which opened in summer 2017. We counted almost 30 options, and that's before the fridge bottles. The small downstairs area is supplemented with a further drinking lounge upstairs, and what the pub bills (in large letters) as a 'secret roof terrace'.

The old warehouse location adds to the briny charm of the place, and the large windows overlooking the Thames are a joy. There's plenty of space in the large ground-floor bar, with further room and a restaurant upstairs. The adjacent yard gives an outdoor riverside option in the summer. The usual range of Sam Smith's beer and wine can be yours for a few pieces of eight.

This old ship just had a refit and is looking even more shipshape than normal. It's a favourite East End pub, beloved of everyone from suits to scoundrels to those visiting for the Sunday night drag-act cabaret. A more ecumenical pub you won't find anywhere. A friendly welcome greets regulars and newcomers alike. It's a pub of three halves (thirds, surely? - ed). The buzzing front bar is where the main action is. A smaller secondary room offers a more intimate drink. Finally, at the back, there's a games room with a pool table. A straightforward selection of food and drink (including well-kept IPA) can be gained from the bar.
