Food Scene

This is one of our favorite local restaurants. Many of the ingredients are sourced from our island or nearby farms. While it's a hip place, we've always felt welcome to bring our children.

Nestled in Lynwood Centre on the south end of the island, The Marketplace is a nice stop for coffee, pastries, delicious baked goods, and good conversation. There are tables and couches to rest on while you work or converse.

Ok, I'm not going to mess around here. I am a coffee snob. For my money, the Town and Country boasts the best coffee on the island and the best and friendliest service. They do not produce coffee art but if you want a good bean at the best price, head there.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is one of our favorite spots but be warned: Because it is cozy and the only 21+ pub on the island, there almost always a wait. But, the drinks are great, the food superb, and the views of the marina all you expect from and island pub.

Parks & Nature

Think of the Bloedel Reserve as a mini-Butchart Gardens. The kind of thing only a wealthy lumbar baron of the past century could conjure and afford, the gardens make for a lovely stroll and feature stunning views from the main house.

A short stroll from our house, this beach is one of the few sandy beaches on our island. Relax, pack a picnic, and enjoy watching the ferry come and go through the harbor.

The perfect tidepooling beach at low tide (check tide charts online to find when the best hours are). Anemones, sea stars, mussels, clams, and crabs hiding under rocks are all to be found here. My kids love this "crabby" beach!

Another one of our favorite spots to let the kids run free and explore, this park has several trails that wind through the forest. From the parking low, follow the short 1/2 mile loop trail and enjoy second growth firs and cedars.

One word: AMAZING! This harbor was once the largest ship-building site in the country. It is now a quiet spot where the only remnants of its former industrial glory are the pier stubs and graffiti-laden cement building. A small sandy beach sits behind the building and trails weave throughout the park. Pick wild blackberries and overturn rocks to reveal little crabs.
