Walk around this rugged section of coastline to soak up wide open views and meet the local Seal population. Take food and drink with you - this is wilderness. 4WD vehicles can access this area Monday-Saturday. Sunday is foot and bike access only. Allow half a day. Sheltered in Northerly winds.

Hike up through the back of our property and connect to a network of bush tracks that lead out to the coast or connect to the Southern walk way and head in to the City. Great views and birdlife. Allow 90 minutes into town.

3 minutes walk from the house, Houghton Bay is a well known surf beach and picks up all the Southern ocean swell on offer. It is fickle as far as quality surf is concerned but when its on can produce some really nice waves. Swimmers or beginner surfers should take extreme care, the beach drops off quickly and there can be strong rips. There is no lifeguard.
The snorkelling can be spectacular here when conditions are right. Its part of the Taputeranga Marine Reserve and its common to see big fish, Paua (abalone) and Crayfish (lobster) with out getting your feet wet.

Houghton Bay
3 minutes walk from the house, Houghton Bay is a well known surf beach and picks up all the Southern ocean swell on offer. It is fickle as far as quality surf is concerned but when its on can produce some really nice waves. Swimmers or beginner surfers should take extreme care, the beach drops off quickly and there can be strong rips. There is no lifeguard.
The snorkelling can be spectacular here when conditions are right. Its part of the Taputeranga Marine Reserve and its common to see big fish, Paua (abalone) and Crayfish (lobster) with out getting your feet wet.
Houghton Bay is smack in the middle of this marine reserve. Established in 2009 it is now teaming with sea life. If the surf is low and the water clear you can see abundant fish, lobster and Paua (abalone) in shallow water with a snorkel or even in the rock pools.
