Food Scene

Comfortable spot. Free WiFi. Baked goods are from Crescent City Bakery and they have bao from Bao and Noodle. Wide selection of teas - my favorite being black mango. It gets busy by noon - lots of freelancers use the space. However, outside tables are usually available, even when it's nice out.

THIS is one of our favorite spots. I'm a fan of sitting at the bar here. It's quiet, the staff are friendly and engaging, and it's a beautiful bar. Happy Hour is from 5 - 7 pm where delicious, classic cocktails and house wine is $5 a glass. Margaritas and Old Fashioneds for $5! I usually do appetizers here. Favorites being the grilled octopus, fried oysters, and pomme frites (really good fries!).

This is my go-to place for brunch. It's very close to the house. The food is consistently good. Weekends are bottomless mimosas for $15 and Sundays is jazz brunch (reservations are recommended unless you prefer to sit at the bar, which I usually do). I'm a fan of the Cochon D'Lait and the Bywater Benedict. The lamb burger is also a win. NOTE: They are open early morning until 3pm except Wednesdays.

KING CAKES! These are my favorite king cakes in town. They have a variety of king cake fillings. I'm one for the Creole cream cheese king cake. The Chantilly cakes are sweet and fluffy. Slices are built for 2. It's also a nice, quiet spot to sit and enjoy the day.

This is one of my favorite places in the city for a Po Boy. I only ever get the Firecracker Shrimp and gumbo - these are my New Orleans staples! Parasol's is very casual - you order at a small window and help yourself to water and iced tea.

Classic, delicious Po Boys. Hot sausage and cheese! You get a free drink with every Po Boy. Order your Po Boy at the cash register. You'll be handed a receipt. The LAST TWO numbers of the Receipt Order No are your order number. They will call these last two numbers when your order is ready.

Another favored place for brunch. They do all-day breakfast throughout the week too, though I like the weekends. Live jazz - lots of conversation and laughter. My go-to is the fried chicken and buttermilk waffles. Rumor is - a new menu is coming out.

Drinks & Nightlife

Mimi's is a great local bar - well-known in the area. It's a bar, but also the best place in the city to get tapas (small plates). The spiced duck skewers, lamp chops, and goat cheese croquettas are favorites. They have a 'Trust me' option - the chef's surprise small plate of the night. Food is 6pm - 2am weekdays; 6pm - 4am weekends. Various music events happen on weekends (mostly) upstairs.

This is a popular local haunt. The front part has a bar, a few tables, and a pool table. Drink specials a-plenty! They host events like Game of Thrones viewing nights. In the back is a stage area and Vietnamese Kitchen. Delicious pho - lot's of complexity in the broth. I usually get the rare beef. The banh mi po boys are also recommended, my favorite being the pork. The stage showcases comedy shows and live music.

One of my favorite spots in the Marigny/Bywater. I'm not one for crowds so I like to go during the afternoon (12 - 3pm). Wine is $5 a glass. The entertainment is still stellar but more intimate. However, I have some favorites that I like to see despite any crowds, like Helen Gillet. Small plates are served here. I usually grab a bottle of wine, and some cheese and meats in the wine store. They'll cork the wine for you and prepare the meat/cheese on a platter, then deliver to your table. Same for any small plates that you order.

Parks & Nature

A 10-minute walk from the house and you're at Crescent Park. The park is the best place to jog in the area. Much of the roads and sidewalks in New Orleans are uneven. Crescent Park has evened paths for walking and jogging. There are areas to sit. And you're along the Mississippi River - with great views of downtown New Orleans! From time-to-time, events are hosted here, like 4th of July and NYE celebrations. Great place to view fireworks!

Arts & Culture

NOMA is the oldest museum in New Orleans. A nice mix of modern and classic pieces. After your visit to the NOMA, and weather permitting, stroll through the Besthoff Sculpture Garden.

Getting Around

Riding through the Marigny/Bywater areas is worth the rental. I suggest heading to the Country Club or The Joint - both in the Bywater. You can also bike along the Mississippi River at Crescent Park.
