The tide runs swiftly here in and out, so take care if you are not a confident swimmer

A lovely little private bay only accessible by foot. A short walk from the Lonely bay carpark via the Shakespeare Cliff gravel road, or, to enjoy the scenic bush on the way, start form either Cooks beach western end, plenty of parking on the grassy reserve, head across the footbridge and follow the signs for Shakespeare Cliff and Lonely Bay. Or start from Flaxmill Bay and take in the scenery climbing the track from the eastern end of the beach. Observe the rare New Zealand dotterel | Tūturiwhatu, making this beach their home.
